I am currently treating a guinea with an abscess under his chin. He has had it lanced and drained and has been on baytril since Monday. I have spoken to the vet today about putting him on another anti biotic and she is going to look into getting Septrin for me. Can anyone tell me what the dosage should be so when I speak to her again tomorrow I will know if she is prescribing the right amount. Thankyou
 
It is usually the paediatric Septrin suspension prescribed, for which the dosage for an adult pig is usually 0.5ml 2x daily. This can be increased, highest I have heard of is 1ml 2x daily, this was for a very stubborn UTI.

Adult suspension is also suitable, but as it is twice the strength, it is half the dose. 0.25ml 2x daily, with a little scope to increase if the vet sees fit.

However there is an antibiotic I have heard is excellent for abscesses, and that is Zithromax (azithromycin).
 
The only problem you might have with Zithromax is that your vet might be reluctant to prescribe it as it is not normally given to pigs so you may have to sign a disclaimer. However, it is a great antibiotic so is definitely worth a try. My pig was prescribed 0.5ml once a day for seven days and then alternate days for a further seven. His abscess disappeared and healed within five days. Fantastic stuff!:)
