so my piggy has an abscess i have to keep clean and open so the puss can drain out. anyone delt with this sort of thing before or any ideas on the best way to keep it open. any advise would be appreciated as i'm struggling and it's making me feel abit ill :red thankyou :)

When my pig had an abcess I bathed it twice a day with warm salt water and cotton wool (as advised by the vet) and this was enough to wash away any scab that was forming. Then gently massaged around the wound to expel any pus.

It's not a pleasant thing to do but shows just how much you love them. I hope your piggy gets well soon. :)

My Wilfie had a really large and deep jaw abscess a few weeks ago. I kept the wound open by first bathing it and removing any scab, and then I flushed it with saline using a 5 ml syringe.

Wilfie was also on the antibiotic Zithromax, which is the best antibiotic to use when dealing with abscesses. He has now made a full recovery.

thankyou! i wiped it over with warm sterillised water on some cotton wool but he just wouldn't stay still for me bless him. i think plonking him in the bath might make him behave abit more. i feel so bad for him, wish he could understand i'm trying to make him better :) xx

My Fred (RIP darling) had an abscess after his neutering op. My partner and I gently cleaned it daily with water and a cotton bud. I also had the pleasure of squeezing out the pus (it did smell bad) as advised by the vet. He was on Baytril which we syringed into his mouth (under great protest). We did this daily for a few weeks. He recovered from this, but unfortunately died about 6 weeks later of something else :-(

oh no thats awful :( i'm so sorry for your loss.
yer my little man got his abscess a couple of months after he got neutered, i wish i didn't get it done now. it just isn't worth it :(

I feel that it was the right thing to do to get him neutered as his brother died and I couldn't bear for him to live alone for the rest of his life as he was only 2. He lived with his 2 new girlfriends for about 6 weeks and adored them. He appeared to be happy again, so I will never regret that! I'm just really sad about the suffering he went through to get to be with his girlfriends!
Hope your piggie will get well soon.:)p

thankyou :) i bought 2 girls and fluff turned out to be a boy. they had 2 litters together so i either had to get him neutered or seperate them. it isn't fair for him to go through all this though, he hasn't done anything to deserve it.

Hi love i found using the makeup wipes was better, no little bits of fluff came off that way......it's a little firmer on the scab too so it does rub off easier.
If you're struggling ask the vets or the nurses to do it for you, it is necessary to keep the wound open.
Oh and i found i was careful with hay......i made sure that our boy was kept on towels and only had hay in one area for eating so as he couldn't get anything in his wound.

thankyou :) i bathed him this morning. ended up getting more wet then he did :(|) he wouldn't let me clean it, he was wiggling to much. and he ended up with lots of parsley as i felt guilty. but i got help this afternoon and we have cleaned and squeezed it twice today. :)) i think hes loving it to be honest all the extra treats and cuddles he is getting :(|)

Well done. It is tricky doing it on your own so great that you got some help. I perfected a technique with Joe in the end but it was hard going at first as he kept wiggling and I kept hesitating. By the time it was healed he seemed to really like the special cuddle and tv watching he got afterwards.
:)

please help! i'v been trying to do it ages this morning but it's started healing up :( he's had a soak in the bath and i'v tryed wiping it with a wet cotton pad. can't get it back open, any ideas? rolleyes

gently pick the scab off then just keep wiping with warm salty water to loosen the rest off until you can remove any built up pus.

Once the pus has stopped forming you can allow the scab to form and heal.

Yes this is why using a firmer cloth and hand will knock off the scab.......... It is not easy to do, it is scary, but you have to do it ( HUGS XXXXXXXXX) it is the best thing you can do love xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>
you'll find you'll have to be VERY firm........yes he'll squirm and WHEEK but to get him better you have to do it (sorry for being firm but i have been thru this and i know how you feel ) keep treaties at hand whilst you do it.........try the wrap in a blankie or small towel (like a burrito) and expose the area you need to treat.
As i said before if you're struggling ask the vets/nurses for help or see if someone else can help you :)

is it normal for it to bleed when it opens back up? i just feel awful doing it to him. wish he could understand i'm trying to make him better :( xx

Yes, some blood could be normal. It's just the same as if you picked a scab on your knee. Are you still getting pus out? You're doing a fab job.

it isn't a little bit of blood. it's loads coming out with the puss. should i take him back to vet? :...

It's hard to tell without seeing him. Going on my own experience of squeezing Joe's abcess, as the pus was getting less and there was also blood coming out. At the end it was just blood.
However, when I wasn't squeezing the wound closed over so that blood did not trickle out.
If it is just blood and pus coming out when you squeeze, then it sounds like what I experienced with Joe.
If the abcess is generally oozing blood/ pus (and you can see it in his cage, etc) then I would be more concerned.

If you are worried, phone and speak to your vet to put your mind at rest.

HTH. :)

thankyou sooo much for this advise. your all stars! gawd knows how i'd of done it other wise. ooo ok i'm hopeing hes nearing the end of it then. i'm gunna take him into the vets on monday anyway just to make sure its alright. going to leave him alone for the rest of the day now. don't think he's too happy with me, but managed to get some out but there has only been me by myself all day to try do it. mallethead

good luck, abesses are not fun, my tiger had one from a fight with his old cage mate (before I promptly split them up and got them new friends) i found only way to keep him still was to rap him in a towel so he couldn't move his body or legs and then you just have his head to deal with, still not easy though!

haha yer i no it's such a pain. fluffys abscess is were he got neutered and it is soo had to keep him still and do it when its just me mallethead

yes that would be a tough one it was difficult enough to master the art of rapping the body so only had to deal with the head (which incidentally works wonders for medicine too) dunno how you could do it if problem is on the body not fun at all!

Aw, they have no idea the stress they cause us rolleyes
Hope your little man makes a speedy recovery soon but with all the pampering he's getting...;)
Boys eh :))

just to update. it's looking loads better today it isn't filling up as much and it isn't feeling boiling hot anymore. :<>
