As if I haven't got enough going on with the guinea-pigs, it's all becoming unaffordable :(. But I've just gone to put the girls in their run and noticed Pebbles has some nasal discharge. It's not a huge amount, just a bit of brown/yellow and the inside of the nostrils look slightly wet.

Her eyes are nice and bright, and is eating and drinking just fine and moving around as normal. We have a vet visit on the 8th anyway to discuss her sisters Ovarian Cyst, so we will bring her along for examination.

Does anyone know what this could be? The nasal discharge is the only symptom she has, but I am at the end of my tether with everything :(

Oh no! You and your piggies have been through so much. I am sorry to hear this. I hope it is nothing serious.

It is difficult to say, could be the start of a URI but it could also be allergy related. It's good that you are getting her checked.

Thank you, I am going to change their bedding also and see if that helps. It's all so frustrating :(

What are they currently bedded on?

Woodshavings, not ideal I know, but our supplier store is closing down so unfortunately we have no option until we can find another. We also have the option of Bliss Basic which is rape straw I believe.

Well I've just gotten them out of the run and looked at her, the discharge is completely gone.. inside her nose looks a bit wet still, maybe dust is irritating her?

We're constantly hearing about you and your piggies, you've been through so much!
Can't you be given a rest once in a while, I hope this clears up and all your piggies are well soon.
x

Awww :( I hope your piggy is alright.
If it is the dust that's irritating her, (even though I haven't used it myself) try fleece bedding - it won't have any dust in it and it will be nice and snug for her before she goes to the vet :)

Is the switch to shavings recent? If so it may explain it. Could you order some Fitch? I use it for my hamsters and it is not dusty at all.

Thank you all! No the switch isn't very recent, they've been on it for a few months now. Fitch is actually retailed in Cheshire (where I live) but unfortunately it's 40 minutes away unless we could of picked some up. I don't fancy paying online prices if I'm honest as it doesn't last, what with the rabbits litter trays too.

They were on fleece after Pebbles spay, and will be again sometime this month as her sister also needs spaying, so I will see if there are any improvements. No discharge again today though which is good!

Virtual hugs, you really are having a relentless time of it at moment :( Pleased there is no discharge today

Thank you, it's so upsetting because I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. I hate to say it, but I don't think I could cope with having piggies again after these little ones, I have just had so much stress and worry. I absolutely adore them all, but their health isn't half having an impact on mine!

Hope all is well and discharge has cleared up. I know what you mean I adore my piggies but when they are ill it is so stressful.

Little update - Pringles had her ovary removal (she is fine thankfully!) - but the girls are obviously on fleece at the moment to prevent wound irritation, and so far, Pebbles nose has been clear. .

Looks like I better ditch the shavings and get searching for other beddings!
