Had 2 take my big boy (Shambo) 2 the vets last Monday 2 have his eye removed. Couldn't be sure whether he had injured it or whether it was something underlying as it had just appeared so quickly & there was no way 2 save the eye, it was protruding massively & has already 'dried'. Anyway, the vets kept him in Monday night, did the op Tuesday morning & kept him in 4 observation. The vets were really pleased with how it had all gone & I brought him him Wednesday evening.
Perhaps I should add that Shambo is a 4 years old Himalayan.
Anyway, he came home with Baytril once a day (2 guard against possible infection) & Metacam 4 pain. Syringe feeding him Critical Care (with a few added vit c drops 4 good measure) & was due 2 take him back Saturday 4 a check up.
Ended up taking him back on the Friday as notice his back legs seemed very weak & he didn't seem 2 b able 2 eat independently & was getting impacted. Vet told me 2 stop the Baytril & gave me Ranitidine & Cisapride 2 stimulate his gut. His weight was also dropping.Over the weekend, his poo returned 2 normal, albeit a little smaller than usual, but he still would not eat (despite trying 2) & seemed very weak. Took him back 2 the vets yesterday, who gave him a stronger pain killing injection (can't remember the name of it but it began with 'B'). Had a good chat with the vet & she was not happy with how he was doing & we both agreed it looked like an underlying issue has caused the problem with the eye. Came home & it seemed as if the injection did no good whatsoever, infact no poo's despite having loads of food syringe fed. Very listless guin :( Back 2 the vets 2day & we r all in agreement that by the looks of things, the eye could've been caused by a tumor, as he seems 2 have lost his motor skills. they r keeping him in overnight 2 medicate him & get the head vet 2 assess him. I feel absolutely awful. In all my years of keeping guineas I have only had problems with 1 other (Rillo suffers with chronic cystitis, has had a bladder stone removed & just basically seems 2 have periods of being quite ill, eventhough she has had extensive bloodwork done, x-rays etc & nothing can b found. She is a 5 1/2 years old Tufty). I don't want Shambo being in pain & having no quality of life, but then again, I don't want 2 just give up on him (I was advised the kindest thing 2 do would b 2 put Rillo 2 sleep, but we battled on with full support of the vet & she's still here 2 years later, spritely as ever!) so if there's any chance of him recovering, I'll grab it with both hands.
Sorry 4 rambling & the HUGE essay but feeling really awful 4 my baby :( Maybe some1 has had a similar experience & can offer some words of wisdom?

I am so sorry that Shambo is so poorly. I'm afraid I don't have any experience of this but wanted to send him healing vibes!

Get well soon little man!

I'm really sorry that Shambo is so poorly. It's an awful decision to make but if there is a chance that he will get partially better & have a quality of life then I would go for it. My Minky took ill last May & had several ops foe abscesses then she came down with a head tilt which hasn't been able to be cured but even though she's walking round with her head at 10 to 10 she's a happy soul & still bossy with the others. Where there's life, there's hope. Get well soon Shambo.

Aw bless! That's the thing, as long as he's not suffering or in pain I will do whatever's necessary no question. Just phoned the vet 2 check on him & no change. Keep bursting in2 tears every 5 minutes :( People can't understand how I can break my heart over a little piggy but I'm sure any guinea owner would agree, they r part of our families & have such a huge impact on our lives with all their individual personalities. I currently have 7 & they r all very different. Fingers crossed he'll prove 2 b a fighter. I will keep every1 updated on his progress.

Love to both you and Shambo. Sorry you are going through this, he is in the best place at the vets, I am sure they are doing all they can to help him. Huge hugs

Poor Shambo and poor you too.

Has your vet looked at the possibility of it being linked to a tooth root abcess?

His teeth r all fine but obviously there's no way of knowing whether it could b a root abcess unless they do an x-ray, which they haven't done. Good thinking Batman, I'll mention it 2 her when she rings me 2nite. Certainly a possibility with the eye popping but would it explain the muscle weakness?

Hope the little man will recover soon, and I love the fact that you are not giving up on him. Your vet sounds knowledgeable, but maybe they could ring one of the expert vets advised on here for a second opinion (I think Simon and Glenn?). Just a thought.

I am going 2 speak 2 her later this evening when she has finished surgery. 1 of my other piggies has cost me well over a grand in vet fees (& 2 think I paid a tenner 4 her!) & it was certainly money well spent. They often get a raw deal as I have met a few vets who wouldn't even entertain the idea of even trying to help a guin. I had a little girl many years ago who wouldn't eat & was 'out of sorts' so straight away took her 2 the 'local' vet who said she probably had renal failure & just said she should b destroyed! Needless 2 say I refused & just asked him 2 give her pain relief & took her back home 2 syringe feed her. Unfortunately, the following day she passed over, peacefully (if only I knew then what I know now :/ ). I honestly believe if I had gone 2 the vets where I take my guineas now, she would've recovered. I will always feel guilty about that.

Please don't feel guilty as we are all learning as we go along. 15 years ago, I didn't want to take my guinea pigs to the vets, because of what you stated above. 4 years ago this forum saved my lovely Shui, because I still had reservations. I'm now in the super lucky position that I have a wonderful vet, who deeply cares about guinea pigs. I could just hug you for not minding the money, it's a rare thing :D (I won't cyberhug you as this is creepy). I do love guinea pigs and I think they should be treated like a dog or a human when it comes to care. I hope you get some answers.

Thanks :) The practice I use now has many vets that r guinea owners so they understand how much a piggy can mean 2 some1. When Rillo was having all her stuff done it looked like it was the end of the line 4 her (she was just over 3 at the time) & 1 vet in particular asked me what I wanted 2 do (by this stage we were nearing the thousand pound mark & I had not long given up work due 2 my health being pants). I just said I wasn't ready 2 lose her & I think because she saw how desperate I was 2 get her well she literally threw EVERYTHING at Rillo that could b of use & sure enough, after a week or so she was well & truly back 2 being on top form. I don't think I'll be that lucky with Sham, but he deserves the same chance, after all, they're more than just pets, they're family!

**hugs** however creepy. My vet mentioned that he didn't like the fact that guinea pigs got a rough deal. I hope your own health has improved since then.

Lol, thanks. Unfortunately, I was born with autoimmune disorders which r progressive & since the last flare 3 years ago it has left a lot of damage so looks very unlikely I will b returning 2 work or a sense of 'normality' but hey, as long as I keep breathing ;)

I don't want to put a downer on you shersher78, can I kindly ask that you don't use "text speak" some of our members find it hard to read, thanks a lot. ;)

Have just got off the phone from the vet & Shambo is no better, but no worse so that in itself is something I guess. He is taking syringe feeds but is swallowing more readily now whereas b4 he was trying 2 b a hamster & store it. They r also going 2 treat him 4 parasites/worms, due 2 the fact that obviously they can get them if they r stressed, coupled with the fact that parasites can cause nervous system issues. Mentioned about the tooth root abcess which she said could well b a possibility but obviously doesn't want 2 give him an x-ray with the way he is at the moment as she wouldn't want 2 risk giving him gas or anything. She is personally taking care of the animals tonight so is going 2 blend down some veggies 4 him & try 2 get him 2 take that. if there is any change she will ring me, I can also call at any time 2nite if I wish & otherwise she will update me 2morrow. Dare I say I'm feeling a little more optimistic? Thank u 4 all your kind words, it has helped knowing there r other guin lovers that understand how I'm feeling.

I'm not too sure about the muscle weakness but if he has been poorly for a while it could be linked to his general ill-health. I am going to tag @furryfriends Excellent Adventure Sanctuary who has a lot of experience with tooth root abcesses as she runs a dental sanctuary and works very closely with Simon Maddock.

My OH has an auto immune disorder too so I know how they can affect you, hugs.

Vet has said maybe a parasite or something that has caused neuro issues due to the stress from the op & anesthetic but she is considering the tooth root abcess as a possibility because of the eye pop etc so I thank you for that ;) Just to add, he was not himself for literally 2 days, 3 at the most so fingers crossed it's not too late to sort this out. I have told her about Simon & we are going to discuss the next step tomorrow.
