Think I have pretty much tried everything, but has anyone any good reccs for something I can use under a guinea pig who is mobility compromised. This is only short term in the hopes he will regain full movement, I am probably being rather selfish in continuing to try for longer than a couple of days - but want to give him a chance. Anything like vet bed just ruckles up, and any depth of bedding of any sort impedes his movement and worsens the situation. I get the best results on newspaper which I was changing several times a day, however I have now run out and have no way of getting any more thanks to current situation. Wood shavings would work, but he gets them all into his food!

Hi

Here is our comprehensive advice and tips about caring about guinea pigs with mobility issues. Looking after guinea pigs with limited or no mobility

I find vetbed the best; google for cheap vetbed or dog vetbed- cut it up in smaller patches so you can change regularly 2-3 times in a day where he sits. It is a useful buy as you can reuse it with any ill piggies and also as lining for your carrier. It is the most absorbent and comfortable bedding but it has the disadvantage that hay and debris sticks to the small, soft fibres.

What about those heavy mats that have non slip rubber underneath, like an entrance mat, I’ve seen s9me in B&M I don’t know if they are car mats or door mats.
I hope his mobility improves, give him plenty of time, some piggies do fully recover x

Thanks for all the replies, one had me googling different types of bath mats as the only one I'd seen wouldn't have worked but I hadn't realised there were different types!

I am struggling with him atm, and perhaps only trying to distract myself with the search for bedding, but it's so frustrating, he has regained some movement, enough to keep burrowing under the carefully arranged things I want him to sit ON!

I am going to try the last suggestion of the mats - because the heaviness might work to stop him ruckling it up and then either going under or trapping himself with the folds.

How about trying to find something to put over him instead if he wants to hide. Sit him on the absorbent bedding and drape a light fleece or mat over him like a little cave. My George doesn't like sitting in the open but he'll lay in this bag for hours even though he's completely visible he doesn't realise it! I can't recommend this for your boy because it doesn't wick, but if you cover him up it might help?
George does FOF.webp
