Hi 👋 I have a guinea pig named Hans. He lives by his self but is always happy and squeaking. I went on vacation for about 4 days and no one was watching him. I left him with with a full water bottle and a pile of hay. I came home just now and he is not squeaking a lot and when he squeaks its super quiet. Usually it’s loud. His face looks swollen too. He is eating and drinking. I think he Is dehydrated. Also he is really weak right now. He is almost one. Should I give him a bath and clean out his cage? Would that make him feel better at least?image.webp

@Hans4693 I recommend a vet visit. Pigs need to have a constant supply of food travelling through their digestive system so if he was without fresh food for 4 days his digestive system could be shutting down. A dose of gut medications and syringe feeding might be needed.

Is he still pooping? That's a good indication of what is going on.

Although you left him with a good supply of hay and water he would be unlikely to eat after a day or so. They like fresh and need top ups at least once daily.

You don't mention fresh veg. Are you giving these daily too? Here's the feeding guide from this forum (link below). Roughly 80% hay, 10 - 15% veg (1 cup per day) and 5 - 10% pellets (ie bought guinea pig food.)

I would definitely take him to the vet as he may not have been drinking much 4-day-old water either.

Thanks for your help! Hans is back to normal. He is acting normal again and he is happy! I gave him hay, food pellets and water, and he recovered. I’m giving him fresh veggies right now. Thank you for the help! image.webp

Glad he’s feeling better.
If I have to be away for more than 24 hours I have a very good friend who comes in to feed my piggies for me.

Always good to have a pet sitter if you are away, most will look after piggies very cheaply- ours charges only £5 per piggy per day for basic care if we supply the hay and food, and she texts me pics every day so I can see they are ok!
