Hello,
I have recently (2 months) got a new male companion guinea pig for a deceased one, to accompany a much older male.
The older one is about 6, younger about 4 months. The new one constantly humps the older one which I know is normal behaviour, but the old male is weakening and today I looked at his genitals to find that they are swollen and quite smelly and possibly oozing pus. Could this be as a result of the other boar actually penetrating the old male and causing irritation?
Sorry - grim topic but I am worried for the old boy.

If I were you, I would take your older boy to the vets for a check as his genitals shouldn't be swollen, smelly and oozing pus. I doubt this is due to your young boy as he is just exhibiting normal dominant behaviour

Thank you so much for replying!
I agree and have been cleaning his genitals with warm salt water - they were better yesterday. I was just wondering about the possible cause?

It’s pretty common for older boars to get problems with their back ends - impaction, excess secretions from genitals (which can look a bit like pus) etc. I think it’s unlikely it’s caused by your other boar directly, but it might be that your older one’s been scent marking more or had a testosterone surge as a result of having a younger male in the territory.

Hope he's ok. I've dealt with impaction in my last older boars but obv more their back end.
My six year old boy Rupert tends to get pretty smelly, builds up a lot of nastiness and def needs to be cleaned by me with just boiled water at least once a month, can be scary if you've not done it before but sure lots of info on here to do it, how I learnt! :)

My mum kept a lone piggy and he used to pong when I went round to hers, my family thought I was odd when I said I was gonna clean his man bits but used to be pretty horrible poor guy. Looked like pus but just a build up if not been cleaned.
They just get a bit of a build up of stuff and looks pretty grotty. And prob feels it too!
Hope all ok for the little guy :)

Thanks for this insight. It's the back end that's the problem actually and not so much pus but slime. *eeeew* . Monitoring it for a day or two.

Oh sorry, yeah should have realised with your thread title! More back than front! Still hope he feels better very soon though! :)
