Hello-

12 days ago my first guinea pig died suddenly from what we suspect was heart failure. She left behind her daughter, we let her say her goodbyes and then buried her next to her friends in the garden who we have also lost over the years.

Initially the daughter seemed ok by herself, by day 4 she started showing signs of grief and weight loss and started hiding away, we introduced another friend who used to be apart of her herd but we had to separate due to sibling dominance issues with her sister. We've had to start supplement feeding/ critical care, water, she has ample vege and hay available but hasn't really snapped out of her grief and I've been doing this for a week now, she's definitely heading down hill, now has diarrhoea, I have a vets appointment scheduled this afternoon with the worst case scenario being it's time to let her go. I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this with piggies that are related? Having a strong bond, having a friend hasn't really helped and she shows no interest in food, might have a little bit of grass but then goes back to hiding/ staring at the wall. I feel I've tried everything, and maybe I just have to except that this is it. But I hoped that maybe others might have experienced this and could offer some insight in to this?

As a side note, she's 5 years Months old, has had a history of bladder stones, and is medicated daily for arthritis in her back legs.

Thanks.

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Acute pining is actually very rare.
I have added a guide below which covers acute pining but you are doing the right things in syringe feeding her (make sure to weigh her daily so you can monitor that she is getting enough), and getting her to a vet (it’s important a health issue is ruled out).
Often a new friend does help but sometimes the bond with the original piggy was so strong that they just won’t accept anyone else (and added that sometimes older sows are less willing to accept a new friend anyway).

Sending hugs and best wishes

I’m so sorry for your loss. Maybe her arthritis is playing up and more painkillers would help her feel a little better. See what the vet says. Sending her healing vibes.

I sorry to read this
Hopefully the Vet might find a problem and be able to help her
Sending love to you all and your piggies
