Apparently, as predicted, there is now an acute shortage of woodshavings throughout the country!

I tried to buy a bale from my local animal food supplier on Wednesday only to be told that they didn't have any, try again Friday or Saturday. I went again today and saw a notice up about the acute shortage and people could only buy 3 bales at a time. Considering it supplies people that own horses, then I am a little worried. I bought two. Apparently, they are trying to import some woodshavings from Canada, it is that bad!

I am sure that prices will go up, because demand dictates prices.

Anyone else having difficulties?

I havent been to buy any for a while, because i got a big bag which lasts me quite a while.

How bizarre, no shortages in my area.

Went to my local pet food supplier today and they had bales and bales of the shavings.

i got told a few months ago when i asked why my normal bale had shot up in price, that there was a shortage and they were having to import it, hence the price hike. A few suppliers i have been to still have loads though, so who knows?!

yes the pet shop we use to get it from hasn't had any for ages and keep trying to sell me some horrible brown/red shavings which i just will not buy!..I have managed to get it from other places but have noticed the shortage around my area too

How very strange... well at least I have easy availability to one thing that you all have problems getting, even if I don't use it. Are there not many forests over there anymore?

I was told that most of the UK Shavings come from the building industry and they are not building much at the moment because of the recession.

I don't use them as I'm allergic but the shop I get my hay from always has them in. Very odd. Lots of building going up here in Liverpool though. :)

I'm in the Devon and no problems here so far... All the shops I have been too have had plenty

I'm having the same problem but where i am its like this every year after xmas time when trade is quiet. Last year it took until about march til it was back to normal. I was prepared for it though and got a pallet of shavings delivered in beginning December cos i have 3 horses aswell.

We have massive stocks of them here, they are in my local pet shop for £2.50 for a massive bag and i know where else to get them because they have plenty there too..

I do not use shavings for my piggies. Megazorb is what I use which is far more absorbant and better for the piggies. Shavings are very drying to human skin and can be dusty even when it says dust extracted on the packs.

Thanks everyone.

It is always good to know what is going on throughout the country.

I just paid £8.10 per bale. It is very soft though so worth the price.
I recently tried vetbed as an alternative but when it came to washing it, then it became a problem to me.
