Just curious, but at what age is a guinea pig generally considered to have reached maturity and become an adult? ?

Thanks

Marty

Females reach sexual maturity at about 3-4 weeks and males reach sexual maturity at about 5-6 weeks, though it is different in some cases. Once they're a year old they don't tend to grow much more, so that's when they're pretty much considered an adult.

what is it with you? I know that you are trying to build up your number of posts, but I don't see why. It's not a race by any means.

Marty - I consider all mine to become an adult when they are one too :) Like Kimmie says they tend to stop growing. Saying that, mine grow outwards! LOL ;)

Agree. I've said it before, it just makes the thread longer and more difficult to read.
I would've thought sexual maturity about 3-4 weeks. Which is when it is recomended to separate mum and bubs. An adult, when they stop growing i'd say.

Hmmm it depends how you want to look at it. In the show world there are 3 age categories Under 5 months, 5-8 months and Adult so you could say that pigs from 8 month old onwards are classed as adults :)

I was told that you can class a guinea pig as being an adult at 9 months. That's just by going on word of mouth though. I don't actually know myself.

Thanks for the replies, we were wondering because we bought some food that states for "adult guinea pigs only" and didn't know whether we could give it to our three boys. Blaze is about a year, Scampy is about 7 months and Dylan we're not sure about, but probably less than a year. I guess therefore we'd better save it for a few months yet.

and btw:

lol, I guess I'm a way off myself then ;D

Hmm I have been pondering on when a piggie is fully grown. Baby B is 10 months old but is still pretty small, mind you her Mum is quite a small piggie. Maybe she won't grown any bigger. Perhaps she just looks small compared to my big piggies like Betty and Babs! ;D
