Hi there!

I'm putting the thread in the Guinea Pig Chat section, since all of my pigs are healthy.

I live in Bulgaria, and because quality products for guinea pigs are rare/non-existent here, I purchase a lot over the Internet. I always maintain a pack of Oxbow's Critical Care just in case, but (fortunately) I had to throw away the last three packages without ever using them, because they reached their use-by date.

This left me wondering if I needed a product like Critical Care at all - does it have any distinct advantages over using pellet slurry, aside from the convenience to not have to crush the pellets? I always keep a stash of pre- and probiotics and vitamin C, so I can easily be supplementing the pellet slurry with that. At the same time, if a product like Emeraid and Critical care is better in any way and would help my pigs recovery more easily and quickly from an illness, I'm happy to keep ordering it, even if it may never be used. I can't order it if/when they need it, because the delivery to a UK parcel forwarding company takes ca. 2-3 days, and then from there to Sofia is about a week.

Until now, I've always been ordering Critical Care by Oxbow. If I do order such a product, would you recommend Emeraid over Critical Care? I checked the Critical Care's ingredients, and they aren't too dissimilar from the Adult Guinea Pig pellets.

I tend to use Emeraid now in place of CC. The reason I do so is partly because all my piggies love the taste and partly because you need so much less volume wise to feed to them by comparison with CC. If you're struggling to get a large volume into your piggy then it's easier to give the smaller amount of emeraid. I think it's a good idea to keep a pack in reserve, although Emeraid keeps for ages when it's open as long as you keep it in the fridge. But if you've run out, mushed up pellets and a bit of diaroalyte and probiotics mixed in works fine, too.

Hm, mine haven't tried Emeraid, but I'm tempted to buy one just in case. How long does it keep for when refrigerated? And do you just put the powder in the fridge?

Personally I find the premade stuff less of a headache as it doesnt bung up the syringes as much, id always have some on hand from now on after the issues ive had with syringe feeding! But in a pinch, pellets work fine :)

Thanks! I think I will buy Emeraid, and keep my fingers crossed that my three like the taste
