One of my guinea pigs died during the night, she was one of a pair from a rescue and she was only about 18 months old. They were kept in a cage in a large workshop in our garden.I have had guinea pigs for many years but what I saw this morning has upset me a lot and I am very confused. Her ears had been chewed off. I I have never had any thing like this before, she was laying down last night and did not look her normal self but her ears etc were all ok. Did the other guinea pig do this or was it a rat. I am very worried as I have some old single guinea pigs left that do not move a lot and it worries me and if it was a rat I would rather rehome them then have them eaten alive I also have other pets so poison is not an option. Has anyone else had this happen I really need to know if it is possible the other guinea did it or not
many thanks

Could possibly have been her cage mate, maybe cleaning her? Would there be anyway for a rat to get into the cage?

Hello, they are the normal outside hutches but they are housed in a large shed/workshop, I know I have had mice in there as I have seen them but would another guinea pig eat a dying/dead guinea pigs ears? I just don't know. I have foxes living next to our garden as we have waste land so I have never lost one to a fox yet as they have very secure runs and I only let them out when I am watching but this is a new threat possibly and I really don't know what did it . Thanks for replying.

they are in outdoor cages which are inside a shed but as I have said I know we have had mice.:)

If they are in cage a rat wouldn't get through the wire they would chew into the cage, i had rats get into my rabbit hutch once and never touched the buns just the food. I think i ended up repairing cage floor 3 times they will chew there way in :)

so what do you think chewed her ears off, do you think her cage mate who I also was told was her mother did it.:)

I ain't a clue could be mice but you might never know, was the other piggy near her this morning?

it ran round her when I went down with their breakfast

She could have been trying to get her to get up just a thought but seems a bit extreme but like i said one of those things you might never know answer too. If theres no holes in the cage and you have seen mice doubtful it would be rats

Have been down to see them all this morning and they all look fine :)

Hello, just read this thread. Sorry I have no advice for you about what has happened but its an awful thing to have to find. X
