Advent Candle

I’ve not seen one before, do you light it until it’s burnt down to the following day?

Yes, you burn it each day to the next. No sure of its origin, possibly an earlier version of the advent calendar? I’ll have to google it now to find out!

We always had one when I lived at home and took it in turns to light it each day. You burn it up to the point of the next day’s mark and then blow it out and wait until the next day to re-light it.

I seem to recall from Sunday School (yes, my religious knowledge has dust on it) that as Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ birth and Jesus is the Light of the World it is a symbolic celebration of advent which is the period while we await the celebration of Jesus’ birth.

VickiA is right. I read it’s a home version of the advent wreath in church (with the four candles) which advents the birth of Christ. According to Wiki, it came from Germany but didn’t state when, and is an altered version of the Christingle light children make by sticking small candles in an orange. I remember my son making one in cubs many, many years ago! Anyway, I’ve dug my advent candle out and it’s now waiting to be lit and to burn two days off! I’m prepared to feel Christmassy now it’s December!

Question about Advent Candle answered by @VickiA , thank you.

I’ve had an Advent candle every year that I can remember- I love watching it get smaller day by day throughout the season.

Day 2 attached for you as it’s just been lit

Relieved I got the answer right @Merab's Slave . I used to love our advent candle when I lived at home. Sadly I haven’t had one for many years (not since the boys were very little). I am going to make sure to hunt one down and have one in our home next year.

It’s not too late you know - if you get one this year the first lightning will just be a bit longer

That's lovely @Merab's Slave I remember my late Nana getting me an advent candle when I was about 7, she thought I was old enough- but I wasn't, I couldnt leave it alone, I thought Christmas would come faster if I left it lit for longer! Maybe I am old enough now at 43 to try one again in tribute to my Nana... sadly she passed away just a few days before Christmas 21 years ago, so the run up to Christmas is always quite poignant, that's why we always have a family pre-Christmas get together the first weekend in December, just in case :(

Ooh this would be a good one for my children. The youngest got to light the first advent candle in church on Sunday 😊

I’m rather taken with it, although candles make OH wheeze and sneeze 🤧
