My old boy Bailey is 7 years old. His history is that he came to me over a year ago and had been living with an unspayed rabbit who I was informed used to hump him. When they first came they were split up and I had concerns about Bailey's mobility so took him to the vet to be checked out. Typically, he walked around fine at the vets :
But the vet did think he had some old orthopeadic injuries to his hips. So nothing was done but the vet mentioned about arthitis being a possibility and it being something thats not always thought about in guinea pigs but must be a possibility as it is in other animals.
He now lives with another boar and they are very happy together.
The last few weeks Bailey has got more and more difficult to handle, ie will run away when you try to pick him up and when you do manage to corner him he squeeks like mad as you pick him up. He was easy to pick up previously.
So I'm thinking that he's in pain with his hips. I don't know what could be done for him. Does anyone have any advice? Can pigs be given regular pain relief for life or is it too toxic on their liver?
I also don't want the vet to think I'm mad, we are registered at a 6 partner practice and most of them are very good with small animals but I don't want them to suggest PTS if there is alternatives.
Please has anyone had any experience of arthitis in pigs? We love Bailey to bits and would do anything for him.
Thanks
