Hiya I'm new to this group so I thought I'd just say hi!

I've joined for a bit of advice about one of my guinea pigs. I've got a red rash on my neck which is perfectly round and the size of a 10p. Doctor asked if I worked with livestock which I don't n gave me steroid cream.

On the way home I wondered about the livestock questions and that got me thinking about whether I'd caught out from my piggies...I did some research and read ringworm is very common.

One of my guineas has bald crusty patches around his eyes that are also red. I've been using my steroid cream on him as I've read that's ok?

What do you all think please? I can't afford the vet but if you recommend that he needs it then of course I'll take him..I'm just wondering if there's a cheaper solution.

I have 7 guinea pigs and the other 6 are absolutely fine and they all live together so could it be ringworm?

Hello, welcome to the forum

Sorry to hear this. Guinea pigs can indeed get ringworm and the crust around your piggies eye could be fungal. Steroid cream is not an anti fungal so wouldn't clear this up. please stop using this straight away. Please take him to a vet who can prescribe relevant treatment depending on the fungal outbreak we have a recommended vets list here https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-vet-locator/

Am tagging in @helen105281 as she can give you some ideas on treatment to talk to your vet about

If it was me, I'd want something anti fungal on it straight away . and ..
It's probably worth letting your GP know you have Guinea Pigs .

Sorry for the delay, been out for the last few hours. Here is our Ringworm guide in case you need it:

Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

As others have said, it does need vet treatment, my preferred methods are the oral medication Itrafungol or Imaverol which is used as a dip and not rinsed off so it carries on working between dips. Does he live with the other pigs? is he quite young?

Sorry for the delay, been out for the last few hours. Here is our Ringworm guide in case you need it:

Ringworm: yes he's 3 months old and lives with 6 other pigs. They are all fine apart from him. I know it's contagious but as the others are fine that's why I was doubting it's ringworm. He's going to the vets today or latest tomorrow.

I went to the vets today and it is ringworm...thought I'd let you all know that you can use the anti fungal cream the doctor gives as it has the same ingredients as the vet one. Daktacort it's called and is perfectly safe for guineas.

I'm glad you've been diagnosed and started treatment . I must admit , I am not a big believer in using over the counter products to treat guinea pigs - as I really feel it is important for a vet to oversee treatment . However, I have heard of people using Daktacort successfully for fungal problems.
