Howdy Folks!

A little background...My wife and I purchased our oldest piggy Spaghetti (abysinian/peruvian mix ) a year and a half ago and instantly fell in love. We were not new to the world of piggies so we knew a fair amount going in. We thought that Spaghetti seemed a little lonely and we REALLY felt bad for purchasing a "designer pig" from a pet shop so we resolved to adopt a rescue pig friend for him. Well long story short we adopted Lupin and Beans, two brothers (English) who were the agros in their herd but had come from a really bad situation where someone got in way over their head with a breeder pair.

It became quickly evident that we could not make these three pigs into a herd but we loved all three so they each got their own big cages. Spaghetti, as it turned out, really just loved OUR attention, and by now was so massive (not overweight mind, he's just BIG) that we couldn't imagine putting another piggy in with him. Lupin was so aggressive that we didn't think it would be a good idea to put another pig in with him. But Beans was always an affectionate one, DYING for attention and always curious as to what we or the other piggies were doing. We also had all three boys fixed just to make things a little easier.

Earlier this month we stopped by our favorite shop to get some oxbow and say hello to the breeder Peruvians they have that I think are gorgeous. Imagine my surprise when we see the little female that had been born a month before (on my birthday no less) was still available! When the clerk told us that she was to be the last baby born from my favorite pig who was now retired, we knew we had to get her! We brought her home, isolated her for a little over a week and then started introducing her to Beans. He did the normal boar thing...strutting, chutting, etc, but after only about ten minutes they were sitting quietly with each other. After several repeat performances we decided it was time for them to move in together. Beans has become very protective of our new pig (Snickerdoodle) and they seem to be getting along just fine.

The one big problem is that Beans now ADORES Snickerdoodle's food and will eat it all up! She's just shy of 2 months old and eats the young guinea pig food from Oxbow. Beans is likely 10 months or so old and we put him on the adult stuff around November. Should we worry that he's eating her food, should we worry more that she's eating his?! Should we mix the food together so they get an even mix, or do we have to start feeding them separately? Any advice you can give will be appreciated!

Oh Snickerdoodle, what an absolute stunner! My favourite breed in my favourite colour!

I wouldn't worry too much about the food - the young guinea Oxbow stuff is meant for growing pigs, and I'm guessing your boy is still growing. If in doubt might be worth contacting Oxbow as they'll know best. I believe the young guinea food will be higher in alfalfa, which is fine for growing pigs but not so good long term for adults.

You can't really stop them from eating each other's food, so I'd either mix it up or just feed one type

Welcome to the forum!

They are lovely!

I dont think it will do much harm for either to have the other food for a while. The oxbow pellets for baby piggies conatins alfalfa which is much higher in calcium I believe but for the short term, it shouldn't do much harm. It probably isn't necessary to give the youngest one that pellet food as you can give veg that is a little higher in these.

I have had baby pigs in with adults and they have eaten the adult pellets and get a good mix of meadow and timothy hays, herbs and veg and they are perfectly healthy:)

Hi Dan,

Welcome to the forum, it will do no harm, I've always fed my pigs the same food regardless of whether they are babes are adults.

Is Bean's neutered? Sorry if you've mentioned it and I've missed it! They are adorable! :)

Love forward to chatting!

Thanks for the advice folks! I think I will put them both on the younger piggy food...Beans sure seems to prefer it! And yes, Louise, all of our males have been fixed, we are fortunate to have a very talented vet office just down the road.

One last question for you folks...Spaghetti LOVES to give us "kisses" when we hold him (lick our palms) which I take to mean that he very much needs some salt. He has always had a salt lick in his cage, but has NEVER touched it. We have even swapped it up with the various flavored, unflavored, minerals, no minerals licks and nothing. I have even tried wiping the salt lick on my hand and offering my palm to him and he won't touch it, I've tried offering it to him directly, he'll take a cursory nibble to humor me but won't do anything else, I've even tried rubbing it with fresh carrot and nothing! Beans and Lupin LOVE theirs, but I'm afraid of Spaghetti not getting his proper nutrients because of this. Do you have any advice to get him to start licking his lick?

I'm in love!

Guineas don't need salt / mineral licks, they should get everything they need from a balanced diet. Some pigs are just more kissy than others! :))

HI welcome to the forum, your piggies are all gorgeous! if you werent so far away i'd say you'd have to watch out for pignappers!

Thank you everyone for the advice and the kind words about our piggies...I'm sure you can tell we consider them all pretty special, too! Because I would be remiss if I didn't include him, here's a shot of our fourth piggy, Lupin. It was his picture online that led my wife and I to adopt him and his brother!

And I'm sure some folks are wondering, all of our piggies get fresh greens every night with their kibble, and fresh timothy hay with their breakfast kibble. But as I tell my wife, they won't eat their morning food unless I sing them the breakfast song... ;-)
