One of our guinea pigs decied to jump into her cage today but misjudged the size of her entrance and jumped straight into the bars bashing her eye. She squealled for ages in pain :-(

The eye looked like it had popped out from the socket after lots of cuddles she calmed down and I popped her back into her cage. After a shake of the head the eye looked normal again.

I spoke to the vet and they said just to watch her and if she seems in pain to call them in the morning.

This evening she is quite happy but the eye is very bloodshot around the edges and has bled a little bit. I am going to take her to the vet in the morning but anything I can do to reduce her pain?

I think you can safely assume your pig will be in pain after what happened, they mask their illnesses and pain very well so you may not be aware that they are in discomfort or distress.

Please take her to the vets tomorrow so they can prescribe metacam for pain relief and anti-inflammation together with eye ointment to help reduce the chance of infection setting in.

Eyes heal surprisingly quickly when given a helping hand in the form of meds, however left untreated they can become a serious health issue. You can safely bathe the eye in cooled boiled water with salt added - 1 pint plus teaspoon of salt, this will help until you can get the appropriate meds.

aaww ouch that would of hurt, hope the piggie is doing okay, sorry i cannot give advice just yet, still kind of new to this in a way. i can however wish all the luck in the world for this poor piggie xoxoxoxoxo

Bless her I bathed last night and it is still bleeding. Up this morning and she now has an inflamed eye that has started to cloud, I know from previous experience that this is the natural protection the guinea pig produces when they have eye injuries.

Off to vets later and hopefully she will be back to normal soon.

Been to vets this morning and she gave crazee a good looking over. She said she has had a lucky escape from serious injury! Now have antibiotics and a lubricant for the eye.

Also discovered while she was being checked that she had a cyst on her side but told nothing to worry about. Just got to check it monthly.
