Hi all,

Looking for some advice...

My friend from school contacted me on facebook to say that he was sorry to hear about Ron passing away, and that he and his girlfriend bought a baby piggie themselves a few months ago for his girlfriend's lone boar.

He is now 3 months old and he has offered this little gorgeous pig to me to look after because his girlfriend's 1st piggy isn't really taking to the new one.

My friend sent me a photo of him and he is beautiful drool drool x)

My only concern is that Rufus might be too old for a new playmate? This babba is only 3 months and Rufus is 2 now.

Any advice before I let my friend know would be greatly appreciated :)

The little boar is still to his terrible teens - if your going down the baby boar route, you will need to be thinking 4 - 6 weeks for the most successful pairing but that doesn't always work either.

He's not to old but you do have to find the right boar but if your happy enough to keep them side by side if they don't get on I don't see why not but please remember to quarantine the new pig. As even although the owner's say he's healthy it doesn't mean he is. Quarantine is normally 14 days.

Alternatively you could contact some rescue's to ask about boar dating. At the end of the day somewhere he can choose his new friend is the best idea but not always possible.

Good Luck xx

I think the nearest rescue to Glasgow is in Edinburgh. I was thinking about taking Rufus to meet the wee one to see how they get on.

I'm apprehensive because I don't want to upset Rufus nor do I want to stress out this baby :s

Rufus would be fine travelling to Edinburgh in a Carry Box - Have you contacted Paws to ask if they provide Boar dating as it's be worth giving it a go.

I'd be hesitant about introducing him straight to the Baby as that is breaking Quarantine that's why rescues are normally better as they quarantine the piggies first.

No one can advise if it will work or not - I introduced my male to a baby boar (10 weeks) old all was fine for 4 weeks then they fell out you can't ever predict a Guinea Pig bonding however I do think Rufus could benefit greatly from a friend and if someone would allow you to go boar dating then that would be ideal.

I think it's worth a try, then you'll know if your boar will take to other piggies. I was like this with Fuzzy, Peanut passed away in Feb and he used to be a dominant piggie so I was unsure about getting a friend, THEN i heard about boar dating, went to a rescue and paired him up with a 6 week old boy, that was June and so far so good, its all about personalities though.

Wow, there's a whole world I didn't know existed until I got that guinea pig at a yard sale. .. .

LOL I love how amazed you always are. You little sponge just soaking up the delicious knowledge! You're going to be a piggy expert in no time!

It's like being on another planet encountering an established society. After so many decades and having served in the military and having been a parent and having been all over the world, a person has seen it all and done it all, so to speak. To encounter something of which one is totally ignorant - the newness is astounding. Sort of like being "Mork" in "Mork and Mindy", or like being the Jeff Bridges character in the movie, "Starman". Or even the Kevin Costner character in "Dances With Wolves". You have to change your way of thinking, you have to force your decaying brain to build new synapses.

At least I knew enough to recognize a guinea pig in a mouse box when I saw him.
