Advice for trimming baby pigs nails

Hi,

Does anyone have any good advice for trimming baby piggies nails? Particularly for a very young, jumpy and nervous piggy?I think Gus will be fine with being held to have his trimmed, but I know Hugo will definitely panic and struggle/fight against being held, so I’ve enlisted my mum to help me out this weekend. The boys are approximately 7-8 months old and their nails are piercing my skin when I hold them, so it’s definitely time to get them trimmed, I’m just nervous of trimming their nails so young.

You can train your piggies by handling their feet and nails whenever you have them out; that helps to de-sensitise.

Distract the boys with food. A piggy that is stuffing itself is not quite as aware of its surroundings.

Do the cutting slowly; you don't start with getting all the nails done in 5 minutes. It may take more than one session.

Just give plenty of praise and encouragement, and use our piggy whispering tricks, including reminding Hugo that you are top boss by fondling his ear but also telling him that you love him by stroking around his eye. This mimics how an older more dominant piggy deals with a youngster and tells him that he is to comply with your demands. ;)

When I first had to trim Christian's nails I had to wrap him up in an old towel sausage roll style with the the foot I need to nail trim poking out, trim those nails then unwrap him and repeat until all the nails were trimmed. Needless to say it takes 2 people one to hold the piggy sausage roll while you trim. Good luck!
