Hello again,i wrote last week about Molly being ill after been given a course of Baytrill. It was suggested that maybe a probiotic was needed so i made up a mixture and it seemed to of worked. She was back to her normal self, has been all week.

But this morning she had very loose poos. The vet said it was highly unlikely the Baytrill made her ill and guineapigs dont need probiotics and didnt know the reason why she was ill again. But then gave me powder probiotic to give to her.I'm so confused what to do now.I keep giving her water and kept her on dry food. But shes just hunched up in the corner, looking sad.

the same thing happened to my guinea ralphie after a long course of baytril his tummy stopped working, i hand feed him every 2 hours of science recovery feed via syringe,he also had meta-cam 0.2ml once a day for the pain which they can get my guinea sat all fluffed up in his cage read my thread on health and illness (think i know whats up with ralphie) and all the medication which he was on is here it took 4 wks to get him well and a 500g weight loss over 4 wks but he now has gained 100g this week ....hope this helps also give 1 hour after the antibiotics 0.5miles of live pro-biotic natural yogurt lots of people say dont use this on guineas but a rodentologist who vedra recommended from Cambridge cavy trust said this was the right thing to give when i told her i was using this it never did ralphie any harm....you can get it from ASDA or other supermarkets...bgut please read my thread has all the medication that you need to ask you vet for is on herexxx

Hi Princess,

I am sorry to hear she's ill again. How very confusing to have the vet say probiotics are no good and then to give you some to give!

The standard treatment for diarrhea is eliminate all fruits and veggies, feeding plenty of hay and dried food - both high in fibre. Syringe fluids, ideally a rehydration solution (such as Dioralyte). Probiotic can help - as you discovered last time.

Is she eating? Is she still on Baytril?

No she finished the baytril last sun.I'm just so frustratedgrrrr.
I just want her to be well again and do the best for her.Ive been to the vets 4 times the last 3 weeks, and just dont seem to get any answers.Thankyou for all your help and advice its really appreciated.Ive given her the mashed poo again as she seemed to enjoy it,and keep giving her plenty of water.

I still think it was the antibiotics without the probiotics that made her unwell, but the vet thinks otherwise. Thanks again.x
