Hi All,
Poor little Roly is having bladder stones removed on Thursday (like in 2 days time - eek).
Obviously we are worried about him but the alternative of leaving him untreated is no good.

1. not sure where his sore patch will be but seems like hay will be a pit prickly for him - would a nice towel be better for him?
2. any special foods or anything that will help him?

Thanks.

when zoe had her surgery we had her in a cat carrier with a towel which we changed regularly for a week. then once she was checked by the vet we put her back in the cage with straw and hay. as for the food i would ask the vet, in fact make a note of all your questions and ask the vet or vet nurse when you take roly in. stupid statement but try not to worry. sending you hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls wish roly well :-* :-* :-*

Id imagine towels would be best Katie, other than that ive no idea what to suggest except lots of water to flush him through. will be thinking of him! good luck little fella xxxxx
:smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks Mary & Emma, thanks to my mum we have tons of tea towels so will keep him on them. Fortunately he is quite a clean boy (not a piddle-pants like Tiger). He is a good drinker too.

I just feel so sorry for the poor little sweetie - think he was quite neglected before he came to us (he was an unwanted pet :'( ). I just want things to look up for him, I hate to think he is sad or in pain.

Poor little Roly, I hope it all goes OK. Sorry Katie, Not got any advice to give, but you know we're all here for moral support :)

Aw thanks! The vet said they do this a lot on cats and dogs but because of the small size of a piggy there is an increased risk with the anaesthetic. I trust the vet but will be worried on Thursday!

Lots of healing wheeks and good luck high paws for Roly for Thursday :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Yep i'd do towels also they're nice and soft for them :smitten:

I'm sure you'll come home armed with meds and pain relief after the op O0

We'll be thinking of you both love, take care remember as Julie said we're all here for you O0 :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

awwww bless him :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
yeah towels would probably be best and then you can see if there's any blood or anything as well O0
will be thinking of you and him tomorrow :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: (((HUGS AND PIGGIE KISSES)) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
You know we're all here for you :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

any newa? thinking of you :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: hope he's ok :smitten: :smitten:

Hope the op went well. One of my past pigs once had a bladder stone op and came through it fine. It's horrid when they squeak in pain, I think it's when they're trying to pass a stone. The vet gave me Basil's bladder stones as a trophy to take home and show off! ;D

Thinking of you and Roly :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

any news? I hope he's doing ok (((HUGE HUGGLES AND PIGGIE KISSES))) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :-* :-*

Its complicated!

Apparently Roly is very different inside ? his secum (part of the gut) rather then being connected to his rectum, is connected to his bladder. The vet said he had never seen this before. The stones were in the secum, which meant that he could not remove them due to the risk from bacterial infection if he cut into it. Both me and OH were confused - I asked if this meant that food waste was going into his bladder - the vet said no, it was just fluid that was in there. So the poor little mite is in a lot of discomfort and still has his stones. His scar is very neat though. I am not sure what we do next, maybe he will pass the stones..

We have got some Metcam - the vet said to put a drop on his food every 3 days. Also we have to syringe him food 3 times a day. He is eating though - he has been nibbling dandelion leaves, but he was making a strange grunting noise before and bunching himself up. He had Metcam today at the vets, I don't want to give him too much but the poor little man seems to be in pain and sleepy. is this normal? The vet said he had recovered well, his eyes were bright and he seemed to be a healthy chap.. he is on a towek and in his pigloo, he has his fave foods nearby, will give him some critical care later.

Is he different due to a genetic problem?

Sorry Katie, I have not heard of that :-\ It leaves you no further forward though does it?

As for metacam, one drop every 24 hours...I dont know why he said every 3 days :-\ Not for too long though as it not good long term, maybe 4-5 days until he seems more comfortable. I hope he will be ok!

Oh.... the vets said its pain relief for dogs so a drop every 3 days...
He had some at the vets, I will give him some tomorrow and see how he goes.

Just want to cuddle him but it would probably hurt him!

The poor little man hasn't weed yet - he just tried to and was grunting in pain, nothign came out.. am going to give him some CC now and will syringe some water into him too. :(

katie....sending you and Roly big kisses and huggles....hope he is feeling better soon xx

Thanks Sammy, just been downstairs to see him - he HAS weed and done some poops, no blood, which is great, he has had a bit of water and a good amount of critical care, he was happy to have a cuddle, then when I popped him back he had a toddle round and started munching the wheat heads from the timothy hay which he loves.
Just hope he will be OK. Will give him some more metcam tomorrow morning.

Please can someone advise if I am doing the right things for Roly?
And has anyone come across his strange anatomical anonaly before?

Could really do with some help - never nursed a piggy after an op before..

I really wish I could help, how about PM`ing Maryh perhaps? She has just had a pig have major surgery too but she does pop on to answer her pm`s :)

just keep him warm and confined like in a cat carrier, only pick roly up when needed and feed him when he is hungry. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: as for his inners being connected to the wrong thing have never heard of it before, but hoping all goes well. sending hugs and cuddles to you and roly(huxley too) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and the girls send :-* :-* :-*

awww bless him, poor guy :'( (((HUGS))) :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: I'm sure you're doing everything right :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: How is he this morning? :smitten:

My guinea pig Clover had her op on Monday and the vet told me to give her a single drop of metacam twice a day. Mine says 'for dogs' on the box too. She's had it for 4 days and the vet has told me to stop it now as it can suppress their appetite a bit.

Hope this helps.

So glad Roly is nibbling a few bits - it's so encouraging to see them eat. Sounds like you're doind a great job with him :)

He seems to be in pain when trying to pass anything - squeaking and lifting himself up - but once he has finished he seems OK, pottering about and eating and drinking. We've changed his towels (no blood anywhere thank heavens) and given his his critical care, lots of dandelion leaves and grass as well as his normal food. He's been nibbling on carrot and his piggy muesli as well as the dandy leaves.
We are worried about the metacam as the vets said not to give it every day. However it was so heartrending seeing him in pain when trying to poop that I have put a drop on a dandy leaf for him so that we can see if he has eaten it or not. He hasn't yet.
He's in the vets tomorrow, maybe they can give me some more advise. the poor little sweetie is still so sweet-natured though, he is a lovely little fellow and doesn't deserve this.
