Last night, our beautiful girl Lisa passed away. We are devastated. Her mate Fien is now left behind. She is only 3 years old and she is very focused on other guinea pigs, so she cannot stay alone. It's devastating to watch her run through the cage looking for her friend.

I would like some advice on how to bond her with a new mate, what would give the biggest chance of a successful bond and when would be the right time to do so. My feeling is we should do it rather sooner than later. However, there are two factors that make bonding with a new guinea a bit tricky. First the closest shelter is quite far away, so preferably we find her a mate in one day. My previous experiences with bonding guineas has however shown me that it is very complicated and that more time might be needed. Second, my husband and I are expecting a baby any time soon now, so we will not have all the time we had in our previous bonding attempts to help the bonding work well.

I would be happy with any tips on how to handle this situation and make this period go as smoothly as possible for her.

I’m so sorry that you lost Lisa, sending you hugs at this sad time X
I think you would be better if you could get a good guinea pig shelter/rescue to bond her with a new friend. You then take away the stress and unreliability of trying to do it yourself. She also gets to choose a friend unlike you buying one for her which might not be to her liking. GP’s generally travel well as long as they feel secure and have plently of hay and veggies to eat. I’d give them a ring and see if they can help.
Good luck, let us know how you get along
There are good guides on Bereavement and bonding in the Guinea Pig Guides on the green bar at the top of the page

So sorry for your loss.
Remember to allow yourself time to grieve.

It’s a sign of a loving owner that you are already concerned about Fien.
I agree with all the advice that @Bill & Ted has given you.
Are there Guinea Pig rescues in Belgium?

If not have a good read through the bonding guides which can help you decide on a good way forward.
Do please let us know how things go.

I’m so sorry for your loss and congratulate you and the hubby on your soon to be little angel.
I 3rd the advice above. See if you find a rescue that will do this bonding for you and maybe mention your pregnancy situatuon? They might be more willing to help?

Thank you for your replies and kind words! I found a rescue that does that does guinea pig bonding. We wrote them and are hoping we can bring her this weekend still. Thank you for the input. Now let's hope that the bonding goes well and we can find her a new best friend!

🤞Hope she comes back with a little friend

Congratulations on your imminent arrival too, exciting times ahead x
