Hello everyone, I lost my wonderful piggy Pebbles on Wednesday and we’re all still very cut up about it, none more so than our other piggy, Casper. The pair had only been bonded for a couple months but grew close within that time. And while Casper is still eating, drinking and wheeking as he normally would, he is grieving as any piggy who has lost their pal would.

During our playtime tonight I put a blanket that Pebbles had used on the floor because I was going to wash it but Casper began sniffing it, popcorning and squeaking. Obviously it smells like his dear friend and he seemed so happy with it, but it also broke my heart because it’s clear he misses him so much.
So I just wanted to ask everyone’s thoughts: is it okay to let Casper continue using it when it smells like Pebbles? Will it bring him comfort? Or is it unfair to keep reminding Casper about him? I know it’s important to allow piggies to grieve like we do but I don’t want him to get too depressed that he can’t see his friend again. 😞
Any advice would be appreciated!

I’m so sorry for yours and Casper’s loss. I personally haven’t experienced loss yet, but would say I don’t think there’s anything wrong with leaving the blanket in with him for a little bit. It probably has his smell on it as well.

Once you feel you are on better grounds emotionally in terms of dealing with your grief, then the beat thing to do for Casper would be to find him a(nother) friend he can live with. Boar dating rescue is the best option if there’s one near you. Otherwise it’s good if he’s still eating etc.

Thank you, we’re all feeling very fragile at the moment as Pebbles meant so much to us. Casper perked up almost instantly when he smelt the blanket so I want to give him something that comforts him, but at the same time I don’t want to feel like I’m getting his hopes up (strange I know, but my piggies are my world so everything I do is for them. 😔)

We’ll definitely get him a friend sometime in the future because he’s only young and socialising is important for any piggy, particularly at his age! Unfortunately there are no boar dating centres near us. There used to be one called Maria’s but she told me they stopped doing that when I enquired about it a while back. However, our bonding between Casper and Pebbles was successful because we followed all the correct steps and took it slowly so fingers crossed that happens again when the time comes!
