I need advice please as I've noticed that Branston has a patch of fur missing near his eye. :...

As both he and Hogan (his cage pal) have been doing extra itching I gave them a dose of Ivermectin last Friday but the patch seems to be getting bigger. He's eating and behaving normally and is still very lively but before I book him in at the vets tomorrow I would very much appreciate your advice and comments please.

Sorry this second photo is a bit blurred and actually it looks worse than it is in this photo too.

That looks more like fungal to me, though pigs can get both mites and fungal at the same time. Please note that if you say fungal to the vet they may automatically think ringworm but there lots of other types of fungal that would not show up in a culture whereas ringeorm would.

I'd also say fungal - it's not uncommon for fungal infections to start on facial areas (eyes, nose, mouth) before moving down the body. A trip to a good exotic vet should see you right! It's treatable when detected so don't worry too much, I'm sure it'll be okay with treatment!

Thanks very much for your replies, I'll get him booked in at the vets tomorrow (which are piggy/exotic friendly) and hopefully get it sorted.

Looks like it could be the start of ringworm to me. Hope the vet can give you something to clear it up. :)

Looks like we've got fungal...but why?
under health and illness, a few pages through

I've had Branston & his friend Hogan to the vets today and unfortunately he thinks it's ringworm.

He's prescribed Intrafungol to be given to both of them orally once a day for three weeks but said I'd to watch out for it causing a loss of appetite. He also said to put some caneston cream on and to make sure I didn't pass it on to my other 3 piggies or myself! :(

I've completely disinfected all their cage, toys, bowls and removed their wooden bridges (which they love) and have a box of gloves, hand gel & kitchen roll at the ready. I'm really hoping I've caught it early and can get it sorted, as long as I'm vigilant with the cleaning etc.

Please let me know if you have any further advice on this, it will be very much appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear that :( it is adviseable to replace the wooden bridges though. Let us know how everything (does not progress in this case! :) ) L

I've put some plastic hideys in for them instead but the cheeky pair have tipped them over in protest.... what naughty boys! :))

I'm sorry it turned out to be ringworm but very pleased to see the vet has prescribed Itrafungol. I woukd also recommend Imaverol dips and also applying the diluted solution to the area daily. Pm me if you need any information.

Blimey Charlie, just seen this thread - hope the little fellow is ok. Hopefully we've noticed it and caught it early enough to be treatable with minimal fuss.

Did the vet mention the hay?

Branston is still his usual bouncy, vocal self! The vet was James and he asked if they'd had any changes or stress & where their hay came from. He said the compressed packet hay is usually irradiated (not sure if that's the right word he used) which kills the ringworm but loose/farm hay isn't.

When I've thought about it I wonder if Branston & Hogan got stressed when Eric & Ernie fell out but whatever has caused it I'm on it now & hopefully can nip it in the bud. The F10 disinfectant is on it's way & I'm wearing an apron when I deal with B&H & also being really careful not to pass it on to the other boys........pig eh! x

UPDATE ......UPDATE .....UPDATE .....UPDATE ......
I thought you might like to have an update on Branston's fungal problem after all the help and advice I was given by everyone.

While I was waiting to order Imarverol (thanks helen105281) I was also advised to get my vet to give Surolan ear drops for dogs & cats. After a bit of a battle they prescribed it & my goodness it's a wonder stuff. As Branston only had a small patch it was easy to apply & the results were evident very quickly and I didn't need to use the Imarverol.

I was fretting as I was going on holiday but by the time I went away there was no need for any more medication & my son (NotFondOfCarrots)(thank you very much) just kept up the strict hygiene regime with gloves, F10 etc and Branston is now back to normal. Here are the before and after photos:-

Wow, what a relief for you, it must of been sore for him as well x

The vet told me to put caneston cream on it but he hated me doing that & when I stopped it & put the Surolan on he was a little sweetie & just sat on my knee & let me do it, so it must have been soothing for him.

I've got four other piggies and am so glad it didn't spread to them as well.
