Hi,

Sorry to be so thick but I am new to guinea pigs. I have a honeydew melon and see from the food list that they can eat this but do I leave the yellow rind/skin on or not?

Also my 2 girls seem to do a lot of bucking (not sure that is the right term) is this normal?

Any help appreciated

Lisa

Welcome to the forum. I usually take the skin off, but I think if you leave it on they leave it anyway!

'Bucking' is probably what we call 'pop corning' when they kind of look like they're having a mini fit and jump in the air? That's a little dance of happiness!

Mine don't Sophie! When I was in a hurry one day I left the rind on, thinking they would just eat the fleshm wrong! - obviously not a fussy bunch!

Sophie thank you, I didn't know what pop corning meant LOL but yes that is exactly what they are doing. I wasn't sure if it was because they were afraid or something bad, thank goodness it means they are happy!

I have just given them their morning veg and fruit, they seem to love green beans, I just thought I would try them with something different but the skin thing threw me, I think I will go and add some melon to their bowl and see what they think.

Thanks again for the advice, you have put my mind at rest about the pop corning.

The funniest thing is watching babies who are only a few days old and a bit wobbly on their feet, trying to popcorn! Makes me laugh out loud :))

Well I just took them some melon skin left on and offered it to our red pig (Jennifer) and she absolutely loved it in fact wanted me to stand there and feed her LOL. Our black mix girl (Jaye) also liked it but she is more nervous than Jennifer and only had a nibble while I was holding it. I will find out later if they like the skin or not.

I bet watching babies trying to pop corn is quite funny.

Mine eat everything, skin and all, they also love green beans. Green beans are great for feeding through bars to help a piggy overcome nervousness cos they don't have to come right up initially. x
