Hello!

I'm getting my 2 boys (Otto & Ziggy) snipped on Friday. They can no longer live together so I am getting them snipped so they can live with the girls (obviously in two separate spaces).

I was just wondering if you could share any experiences of the dreaded 'snip' (good or bad) just so I have an idea of what to expect.

Thank you in advance :)

Hi and welcome!

The crucial bit for a neutering op is finding a good vet with plenty of experience in guinea pig neutering or small furries ops, as the the shorter the operation time, the less risk of complications.

Please take the time to read through our step-by-step post-op care guide. you will find it very helpful: Tips For Post-operative Care

With the best vets, your boys behave like nothing untowards has happened. Bad reactions to GA and antibiotics can cause loss of appetite. You always need to see a vet as an emergency if your guinea pig is becoming apathetic at any stage or not picking up re. eating/drinking on their own. You also need to be prepared to step in with syringe feeding and watering after the operation.

In the days and weeks after, please check your boys' bits daily for the first two weeks, then every two days and after a month once or twice weekly. Any swelling in the groin needs to be seen by your vet. It is most often an abscess, but it can be something else.

That said, the majority of neutering operations goes without a hitch. We see more than the normal ratio on the forum (as do all online places) as people come on when they have a problem, not when all is going well. ;)

By the way, I have currently got 5 neutered boars, and have had a succession of them over the years.

PS: Since we have members and enquiries from all over the world, we find it very helpful if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to your details, so we can always tailor any advice to what is relevant and available to you instead of keeping it as general as possible. kyle had no problems whatsoever after his snip but heathcliffe didn't do as well. Both done by a vet with loads of neutering experience. Heathcliffe took longer to come round from anesthetic but this isn't unusual for shelties. His poo and wee output wasn't great so he had to stay in extra couple of days to rehydrate and get his appetite going again. After that he was fine. Neither had any absesses or any other problems.

Both my boys did very well but they developed an abscess after surgery, which did clear up with antibiotics. We wanted them to live together with the girls but had to separate them between 2 cages.

I agree with finding a good vet, it is certainly a must! I had one of my boys neutered and everything went fine. Two weeks later he developed an abscess and underwent antibiotics. Sadly he passed away a week later. I will never know if it was related to his neutering or something unseen, but that's my experience. It hasn't put me off doing it again, but I'd be more prepared for the possibilities now.

Hi, good luck with the ops. My vet at the time was good with piggies, not an exotics specialist but extremely knowledgeable and practised. Peter went swimmingly, no problems what so ever... made owning guinea pigs feel easy! Buddy was a bit more groggy after the op but generally ok. A couple of months later he developed a deep abscess (don't think it was related to the op with it being so internal) and by the time I could feel anything it was huge inside, needless to say he didn't survive after that operation. I don't think it was related to the neutering op but would definitely recommend thorough and regular examination afterwards so that any problems can be identified asap

Thank you soooooo much for all your replies. I'm having them done on Friday! I am a nervous wreck to be honest but it really needs to be done, I hate them being alone... well not alone but separate from each other. Kinda seems cruel if you get where I'm coming from ;)

All the best! Please make sure that you read the post-op guide, so you have got all the stuff handy to start syringe feeding asap in case things don't go swimmingly.

In any case, it is worth it once you see how happy a "husboar" is!

I've had a read through and I'm off shopping for bits tomorrow.

Thanks again :)

My boy has ten wives and loves it.
Hahaha, that cracks me up!

I currently have 6 girls and 5 boys.
I did start off with 2 girls and saw another 'girl' up for adoption.... My lovely new girl turned out to be big daddy Otto!!
After I have had Ziggy and Otto done it will then be the turn of Chip, Teddy and Quinn!

How long before they can be paired up with their new 'wife'?

Full six weeks.Wiebke has a baby from five and a half week neutered boar
