Had my 8 month old Maestro at the vets urgently last night. He was hunching up and squealing with pain every 5-10 mins. i told her i thought it was a kidney stone, oh no she said, piggies dont get them, funny how online it says very common! she said he either has a sludgy gut or an injury so gave him an antibiotic and painkiller and i go back this afternoon. she said if no better then she will xray him.

has anyone had this with their piggy, what was it and can you forearm me with info or advice, he is pooping and peeing and eating, i am so upset.

i'm sure our more experienced peeps will help you once they're up and about :)

The fact that he's eating and pooping is great! Make sure he eats and drinks before going to the vets, don't let them say he needs to fast!! Piggies don't need to!

just read link and links within, he has exact symptoms of either bladder or kidney stones:(

Hope you get to the bottom of this, I'm sure someone will be along with some advice soon. x

It might be worth pm'ing Flintstones, I think she is in Scotland (sorry if I'm wrong) & may be able to recommend a good piggy vet as her boy Patrick has had bladder problems. If you can travel then I would find a vet who is knowledgeable about piggies.

8 months is very young for him to have such issues, poor boy, hope you find out what's wrong soon :)

I believe kidney stones in guinea pigs are less common than bladder stones, the former is more serious as I don't think they can be removed via operation. While I will always opt for an x-ray straight away, it isn't uncommon for vets to treat these symptoms for infection first, which is what your vet has done. I think an x-ray today could be useful, but if my guinea pig was still urinating (indicating no blockage) I wouldn't have had one at emergency vet prices (i.e. Last night) either. That your vet is prepared to do an x-ray today is good. This can usually be done without GA, but some vets prefer to give a quick whiff of gas, so don't be surprised if your vet opts for this.

Hi piglet,
Do you drive? My best advice would be to get him tot he best cavvy savvy vet in Scotland. Glen at Apex vets. Its about an hour and 10-20mins drive from Troon. Not sure where you'd be coming from. Ive tried many vets in Ayrshire even one's that are the ones that claim to be the rodent vet int he practise and they are still not any good. The antibiotic/painkiller approach is common for non cavvy savvy vets for whatever the problem is.
It sounds really like a UTI or bladder stones. I dont know much about kidney stones.
What painkiller is he on?and what antibiotic? Is he on a probiotic too? Also have you been weighing him? Is his weight stable?

Got to add, may not be stone or sludge related - my womble has all the syptoms of stones when you read about it on the internet, but 3 xrays and an ultrasound show he doesn't - he has reccurring cystitis.

his weight is stable, been weighing him all his life. she didnt tell me what she gave him, she got angry when i asked questions,,,,grrrr

if he has bladder stones what will happen?

i will see what happens today then will try another vet.

am getting people telling me not to act as costs more than hes worth, i am so angry and hurt by that, i would do anything for hiim.

when i cuddle him he doesnt do it as much?

I'm sorry but you have a right to know what is being given to your baby!
Perhaps call up and speak to the receptionist/vet nurse and ask what has been used on your little one.

HUGS FOR YOU XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

My goodness I would change vets straight away! That's dreadful :( I drove my Daisy 1 1/2 hours to get to the vet in Northampton, she had an op the same day & I came away a bit poorer but she is only 7 months old, the vet was lovely. Don't give up, there are great vets out there! Can you get to Glen as suggested?

Just had a potentially stupid thought, so sorry in advance, but when you say he is hunching up every 5 to 10 mins, this always coincides with urinating, right?

If it is, guinea pigs don't wee this often - is it very small amounts of urine each time? This would indicate infection to me...

If the crying is not linked with urination or defacation, then it could be something completely different.

ok that vets is over 2 hours for me, will see what i can do, think its bladder stones by the looks of things and what i have read.:(

Hi There,

I'm afraid I have only just seen this post now, my Patrick has had similar episodes due to crystals and most recently stones in the bladder. He see"s Glen at Apex vets, he is one of the best vets I have found.

It is honestly worth the trip, and if you explain the distance you are travelling I'm sure they would be able to do the Xray there and then.

Good Luck. x

Sorry to hear about your little one. Sounds to me like you need to see a different and more cavy savvy vet to get a proper examination and diagnoses.

Could be any number of things. UTI as has been mentioned, bladder stones, kidney stones are much less common than those in the bladder.

How well if your piggie eating?

x.

Maestro went to Rainbow Bridge this afternoon. He had bladder stones and was extremely ill by the time i got to the vets. it was the right thing to do for him. I had been speaking to a guniea pig expert a friend put me on to today and everything taken into account the right thing was to let him go and not suffer.
