Hi Everyone.

Just after a bit of advice. My piggie Morgan was been to the vets who have diagnosed a chest infection. Hes been on 0.2ml twice a day of baytril for 2 and half days now and doesnt seem any better. Hes not really eating or drinking, so we are syringe feeding him. He isnt moving very much either. Hes no worse than at the start but no better either. Do i need to leave him longer on the baytril for it to work or take him back to the vets?

Thanks,

Dave

For me, it seems a week is about the time it takes a pig to start picking up. Thats what happens every time my pigs get sick (and they get better)... if they get worse then its best to go the vets again. Syringe feed as much as possible but just monitor him. You should be able to wait a week at least without any problems :) good luck. x

I'd be expecting to see an improvement within 48-72 hours. Well done on syringe feeding, it is very important to keep food going in and out to avoid the piggie going into gut statis. Are you weighing him each day? How is his weight?

I would be thinking about retuning to the vet as you are seeing no improvement or if he goes downhill suddenly. With some URI's it may be worth speaking to your vet regarding a diurectic called furosemide this can help remove any fluid that is on the lungs.

It may be worth investing in a pro-biotic to give him alongside the Antibiotics as Baytril can be harsh on the guts.

I really hope Morgan feels better soon

Hi,

I am weighing him every day and his weight is stable, although lower than usual. Will be getting some pro-biotics on the way home tonight to give him. Apparently he is eating a bit of hay this afternoon, so fingers crossed.

Excellent, stable weight shows you are getting the syringe feed in. It's good news he is showing interest in the hay today, hopefully he is on the up.

Expect to see some improvement in around 3-5 days - Baytril is harsh so probiotics as sport billy says are important. Also any loss of appetite is usually down to this antibiotic.
Metacam is also excellent as an anti inflammatory and a lot of vets are prescribing this alongside antibiotics - I had fantastic results with an extremely poorly girl last year with this combination and Bisolvon as she had become quite 'snotty' rolleyes
Weighing as suggested is a good indication of poor appetite and keep an eye on Morgan's poo's as well as they give us an idea how they are responding to treatment and how their gut is doing if appetite is decreased - I've had piggies have really bad reactions to Baytril and others who have had no side effects so each piggy is different :{
Healing vibes sent to Morgan for a speedy recovery and we're all here to help if you are worried :)p
