i become the owner of 2 9 week old guinea pigs last week both were fit and healthy and full of life untill this morning one had died in the night there was no marks on him he hadnt had a bad tummy and was eating and drinking fine :( my worry now is do i try and introduce my remaining piggie to another one of around the same age , they werent from the same litter and were 2 different types do you think it will work or will i have problems i really dont know what to weather to find a new home for gary and start with 2 females or try and get gary a friend any advice would be fantastic x

I'm sorry to hear about your little piggy firstly.

With regards to your other little boy - Can you go to nearby guinea pig rescue and they usually do boar dating where they'll match him to a new boar and help you with introductions etc. For his age a boar around that age or bit younger (5-6 weeks) should be fine or even a older gentle boar.

Where did the pigs come from?

I think the best thing you can do is have the other checked by the vet, and quarantine for 2 weeks to be sure Gary is fit and healthy.

Where are you based, we can help find you a rescue who can pair Gary. When you take on an animal it is for good or bad, and I think it would be unfair to give Gary up as it isn't his fault that any of this has happened.

Another thought do you have any rabbits? Was he housed near rabbits where he came from?

I'm sorry to hear of your loss, its awful when they die so young.

ive had a look around but there dosent seem to be any rescues local to me ive been in touch with some breeders and they dont seem to have any ready at the mo ... i feel so sorry for him as he has been really noisey etc and then today and this evening i havent heard a peep from him and he isint eating I'm a beginer to guinea pigs these are my first so i really dont know what to do for the best .... alll i can say is I'm hooked on them even after a week :) x

i got them from a pet shop and it was gary that made me do it i saw him and couldnt stop thinking about him and went back for him 2 days later and then got odie at the same time they are from different litters and are different breeds I'm hoping odie just came from a bad litter i dont want to rehome gary at all its just being a new owner i thought it might be better for him to be with someone with some experience I'm in the portsmouth/ chichester area

Just saw your new post, a guinea pig that isn't eating needs a vet, are you sure he isn't eating atall?

Have you offered him his favourite foods and make sure he is drinking they go down so fast when they are that tiny.

they were in a hutch/run with a rabbit from where i brought them from , but not here I'm scared of rabbits lol he has had a nibble of his treat stick and seems to be drinking ok he is just really nervous still as they hadnt had time to get use to me so everytime i go to check on him he runs like the wind ! i was holding him early and he was making a purring noise and someone has told me this is a sign of an aggressive piggie who isisnt happy :(

has he got hay hon? Sorry to sound obvious, but with you saying you are a new owner, its just he may eat hay x

No purring is not a sign of aggression hes scared. 'Brrrrrrr' I'm frightened, I'm sure you would be to these little animals are so tiny and at just 9 weeks hes a tiny baby.

Could you travel a bit further for a rescue, I can have a look for rescues in the surrounding earlier.

He does need to be seen by a vet, as he's been in contact with rabbits as they carry diseases which can be fatal to Guinea Pigs. (ie pasturella), that's why all rescues quarantine animals.

no thats fine i love any advice offered i want to do the best for him , ive got hay that ive put in as his bedding is that the right stuff ? he has guinea pig food and ive been giving them carrots and cucumber and dandilion leaves as i dont have much else at the moment,

i can get him to a vet next week but i cant ring them till tuesday when they open but if there is no improvement ill be doing that first thing thats for sure ! thats reasuring then I'm glad its not cause he is unhappy i totally understand him being scared ill just try stroking him for abit rather than keep trying to pic him up

good luck at the vets, sorry about garys pal :( sadly its a too common thing to have poorly pets from pet shops (they are not what they used to be many many years ago).

All 4 of my piggies are worried about being handled and its no surprise having a giant come in and pick you up when all your instincts are to run away. But time and patience will bring him round, the first week I had mine they were a nightmare, I have had the 3 girls for 5 weeks nearly now and they are settling down, the boy flash has been with me for a week and he is also getting used to me and being picked up.

Dont worry about upsetting him as he will get used to it but you will need to handle him daily for him to get used to it. I found giving them a slice of cucumber while cuddling them helped a lot.

just a little update had a call from the pet shop today they have offered me another baby next week when they come in to be a friend to mine but I'm seriously in 2 minds about that option so think i may turn them down and keep trying the rescues untill someone gets back to me ..... as for gary himself he seems to be up and about abit more today and i heard a couple of little squeeks when i was sat next to his cage today he still hasent eaten much of his dry food but i did leave a couple of bits of apple for him and he has deffinately eaten one bit and he is drinking water so fingers crossed he is just feeling abit sorry for himself fingers crossed :...

What pet shop were your two boys from? And where about are you located? They should not be being kept in with a rabbit full stop but at 9 weeks old! That is just a disgrace. Poor wee guys. I'm glad Gary is eating! I'd definitely consider a rescue.

they were from a shop called jolleys local to me its quite a big chain I'm in the portsmouth/chichester area there was 2 runs one with females in and a rabbit and one with males and a rabbit :( ive been n touch with some breeders and rescues so fingers crossed gary will have a new friend soon , as he is really perking up thins afternoon eating little bits and drinking and he has been up and about alot more than he was yesterday :D

I'm very glad Gary is perking up and sorry about the loss of your other boy. Best of luck in finding Gary a friend.

If you cuddle him snuggled into a fleece/towel/teatowel then he will feel safer and relax more.
