My guinea pig Cookie has just started, in the last hour or so a very fast heart rate or breathing. She's still munching on her hay every now and then but she seems to have some noise that sounds like she has muck on her chest. Is this a chest infection? She makes a little noise also like a dog wimpering. Does this mean she's in pain?
Please help, i couldn't face losing her also 8...

Thank you in advance

P.s Hope Cookie feels better soon, sorry I'm not much help x

I think you need a vet - the sad noise sounds like pain. I wouldn't advise waiting on the vets to open it may well be a URI and they can be deadly if left untreated.

Phone your normal vet number - they will have a number for the E-vet.

Ooo! Artie had a URI last year he was really ill, but we caught it in time for him to get the treatment he needed. He has a runny nose and was very quite for a few days with rattly breathing. Most vets have an out of hours vets service too. Flintstones has given fabulous advice :)

Oh! Thinking of your little one, let us know..it can be hard when there's not a vet you can just drive to that's open, but that's what the out of hours is there for! Good luck xxxxxxxx

In the meantime if you have a vicks vapour rub floating around the house, dab a little on her nose ABOVE her nostrils.

Just to try and help her breathing until she sees a vet, but she MUST see a vet ASAP.

Good luck hun.

Just got back from the vets. Cookie has a chest infection. The vet gave her an injection of anti biotics and said see how she is in the morning. The vet said she looks bright, no discharge from her eyes or nose.
Fingers crossed Cookie will be ok

Sending lots of good vibes to Cookie! Hope the antibiotics do the trick and she feels much better soon!

aww poor cookie, just what you need eh? Hope shes feeling better soon.

Sending over some vibes and a hug for you (( )) x

That's good news - remember and keep Cookie warm, if she stops eating or loses interest in eating you will need to syringe feed her.

Probiotics are also a good idea to keep the gut moving - these are available online Fibreflex you can get from VetUK.

Did the vet give you any antibiotics to administer at home - might be idea to phone your normal vet advise of Cookie diagnosis and ask for a course of Antibiotics if not already given.

Wishing Cookie a very speedy recovery! X

Hope Cookie is feeling better soon! Have you got Antibiotics to give at home also?

Awwww poor Cookie, hope she's feeling a little better soon x just keep her warm and plenty of fluids and food x

I wasn't given any more antibiotics. The vet said the one she gave would cover for 48 hours. Should i get some from the vet?
Thank you all for your help :)

I would call your current vet - explain you went to the E-vet so hopefully they won't want to see the pig they should have notes of your visit advise they gave her an injection of Abs - but for a URI she should really be getting a course of AntiBiotics hopefully your current vet will be happy enough to prescribe these for you.

How are her symptoms today? X

Much better thank you.

She seems back to her normal self (chasing Chip round the cage :)) ) eating, drinking and breathing much better

Great new's - did you manage to get more Antibiotics from the vet?

It really is amazing how quickly they go down you must have caught it just in time! :) x

I'll have to get some tomorrow morning. I got home from work at 6.30pm and the vets were closed
