I have an approx 18 week old boar.. And a 11 month old sow... In separate cages, I'm really reluctant now to get my boar neutered as my friend lost her two boys on different occasions under anaesthetic.
My dilemma is... What should I do? I want both of them to have a life friend. I know that sows bond more easily but what about my boar? I'm worried if I find him a friend that the smell of my girls will cause tension!
So some experienced advice needed! I don't want lonely piggies :{

If you do not want to neuter your boar then take him boar dating and see if he can choose his own friend. You can do the same for your sow too. It is scary to get him neutered so I understand why you do not want to. I would get them both their own friend and keep the boars in another room.

i had my boar neutered last week and he was perfectly fine. doesn't stop you worrying though. you could speak to your vet and ask lots of questions about how many piggies they've done and if they lost any etc. if you have not got the space to put them in different rooms it may be something you seriously have to think about if you want them together.

Hello welcome to the forum! :)

I'm sorry to hear that youre in a bit of a pickle, but you do have quite a few options available.

A)You can keep them seperated, but have the cages together so they can speak and smell one another.
B) You can take the boar to boar dating, and the sow to neutered boar or sow dating, this way they can choose their own friends.
C) Find a good cavy savy vet, one with experience with neutering piggies so your boar can be neutered and hopefully will bond well with your sow.

:) Lots of options for you to choose, but its whatever you feel is best for you and your piggies.

If you have any more questions dont hesitate to ask :)

I know that Crawley Guinea Pig Rescue have got a good and experienced vet who (successfully) does the neutering for them. If I were you, I'd ask them for which vet they are using - a good vet/nurse team is the key to the success of an operation, and you are not that far away!

Otherwise, I would advise you to contact Crawley GP Rescue for piggy dating. Crawley offers a full boar dating service; it's your closest highly recommendable guinea pig rescue. Alternatively, contact Palace Piggies in Crawley, who are working together with the other rescue.

If you go for the boar dating option, you will need to keep any sows out of line of sight from the boys.
