I recently decided to write to a pet store about them selling an indoor cage sized 65 cm long x 40 cm wide x 30 cm high, and marketing it as
being appropriate for rabbits or guinea pigs. I was also concerned as it was on
offer in the store at about £25, therefore encouraging people to
buy it.

I wrote stating the recommended size for guinea pigs and rabbits. This is the response I got. Any ideas on how to respond?

"Thank you for your email which has been passed to me.

As a Veterinary Nurse for 17 years, and a pet lover and owner of several
pets I can fully understand your concerns regarding the Living World
Zoozone Pet Home.

Here at *****, we have a wide and varied team of experienced
individuals whose priority is pet health and welfare. All aspects of the
animals well-being is taken into consideration when designing a product
for our range.

What we need to bear in mind here is that the Zoozone is designed for
indoor use. As such, the animal, for the most part will be a "house pet"
and will be integrated into the family. The Zoozone is designed as an
idea akin to a Puppy crate. If the Guinea Pig (or rabbit) is to be left
alone for a little while, or overnight then he can placed in the home.
Again, if he wishes to go and "hide" from the hustle and bustle, he can
go and get out of the way. We must remember that Guinea Pigs are quite
social animals who will enjoy mixing with the other pets but at the same
time can feel threatened and do not like large open spaces. Rabbits, of
course, tend to live and sleep in small burrows, but explore more widely
when they are out of their "home".We have tried , with the Zoo zone to
achieve the best of both worlds.

Whilst the RSPCA offer guidelines, we must bear in mind that these are
just that, the opinion of one charitable organisation which may or may
not be the same as another.
If you wish to place a Guinea Pig or rabbit in a cage of the size
recommended by the RSPCA they won't mind, but would be better enriched
with tubes, rocks to climb on, and houses to hide in, than just a larger
floor space.
Guinea Pigs, as you know are very adaptable and can do well in a variety
of accommodation, and provided they are allowed to come out and stretch
their legs are generally happier in a smaller, and as they see it,
secure area.
Of course Guinea Pigs do not climb and therefore do not need a great
deal of height.

I hope that this information has helped to explain our philosophy.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any queries regarding this or
any of our products.'

Oh gawd don't you just feel like you are banging your head against the wall?

Would this person want to live in a bathroom 24/7? Yes its nice to have all the tubes, houses etc I use igloos and cardboard for my lot and mix it up and they love it! And yep they are prey animals but they need space to live!

I'm not sure what the response should be because you are probably fighting a losing battle here, hopefully someone with more experience of complaining about these things can advise.

Yes that is exactly how I felt when I read it.

To be honest I think there is probably no point responding. But thought it would help me to feel like I'm not they only one who feels this way.

I don't think they really care.

It is interesting that they describe it as 'spacious' on their website. The rabbit rescue had a poor bunny come in yesterday who was living in one of these, and I had a pair come in last weekend in one. I just can't imagine how bored and claustrophbic they must feel. There is no space for any toys in them anyway!

Feel even more sorry for the rabbits because of their size too.... it's just wrong. It's like Tesco selling that tiny hutch last year that everyone complained about, they just changed the website to say 'should be used in conjunction with run' mallethead

Perhaps you could reply along the lines of:

Unfortunately the animals are destined to spend most of their lives in these cages, as no matter how much human attention / interaction they receive, this is only proportionally a tiny amount of their day. The rest of the time they will be in this cage without the space to exhibit normal behaviour. Guinea pigs love to run and circle, to do this they need a certain amount of square feet. This cage is too cramped for them to do so.

Great malletheadmalletheadmallethead.

I love the illustration of these guys in their video about pet store and C&C cages:

Maybe you can send them the link ;).

I think the point they are missing is that - ok its all well and good saying its only for this that and the other use but there are still people who are out there that will buy these products for the animal to stay in 24x7
Its like p@h when they sell rabbit hutches - no decent knowledgable person would keep their rabbit in any of their hutches 24x7 - but the staff need to explain very clearly when selling a rabbit - which I am sure some do....but I bet the majority dont...how do internet sellers explain at all other then having it in the small print....

I think I will use your words. Very reflective - I was struggling with that

Link is great - I will put it on my website as well - as I really encourage muy adopters to make the C and C cages now

I would also state that according to DEFRA and the Animal Welfare Act 2006 they have stated that in the case of prosecution they will use RSPCA's guidelines.

Thank you - that was just what I needed - seeing as there response suggested that charitable organisation guidelines were not that important!

The guidelines that pet shops HAVE to follow are under the Pet Animals Act 1951 so they are technically doing nothing to contravene by selling the cages. The Animal Welfare Act also doesn't state minimum dimensions for cages so I wouldn't get too deep into the legalities of it. The RSPCA recommendations are based on the "needs" of an animal stated in the act but they are just that, a recommendation based on their interpretation of the law, they are not law unfortunately.

She has shot herself in the foot by saying it's not suitable as a "full time" cage merely the guinea pig equivalent of a puppy cage. I would respond with something rhetorical along the lines of "I hope in future to see your recommendations in-store as clearly you agree that such cages are unsuitable for full-time accommodation for these pets". She also contradicted herself:

"but would be better enriched with tubes, rocks to climb on"
"Of course Guinea Pigs do not climb"

I like the bathroom analogy someone mentioned. Perhaps also send a link to Cavy Cages, not that she'd even bother to read it.
