Hi all i ever seem to do is ask for advice sorry!
I bought 2 girls from pets at home (i now know this was NOT a wise move) on monday and they joined my boys as girlfriends. However its only friday and i have discovered Lice all over the girls. Its horrible and they have spread to the guys as well. I know vet treatment isnt nessecary but the girls are so small and there is so many of them i had booked an appointment for them all on monday. I'm worried they could be ill =(
What i really need to know if where do live live? Can they be on me or my clothes? I let them run on my carpet could they live in that for a short time? I dont want to get rid of them and then they just return!
Nightmare!
Any help to be so useful! Thank you!
ps have run pet shop and informed them, not that they cared. They told me to use flea shampoo but i have heard this is not a good idea as dangerous for them. The shop said they'd check their others.

Try a human head lice shampoo, preferably one based on natural products.
Lice and Easy, pet shampo is also a good product. It would be beneficial to bath all of your pigs.
For once, a simple condition easily treated.

Oh that sounds nice!
* think i should bother taking them to vets on monday or try look after it myself?

It should be treatable at home if lice is the only problem.

There are two types of Lice - Running lice, that look like tiny crawly maggots in the hair - when you part the hair, they wriggle down the hair-shaft towards the skin. They're white / yellow usually. Then there's static lice, which look like dirt / specks.

If you use Lice shampoo the first wash will kill the lice, but there will still be eggs and these will hatch after a few days so it's important to repeat the shampoo (I usually do it 7 days later with Lice n Easy). Also with Lice n Easy you leave the second shampoo on for a bit before rinsing (comes with instructions).

There's some good info here

Thank you! I think i'll cancel the vet, i fear it may be very expensive!
I just looked at the gorgeous guineas website it says the shampoo is for pigs over 12 weeks, i have a feeling my girls are younger than that about 8 or 9 weeks! Thats the only problem!x

I had this problem too so I spoke to Chrissie at GG & she advised to shampoo them as per the instructions but not to leave it on for 5 minutes for the little ones - it worked a treat xx

I emailed Chrissie from GG and I think she said it was ok for younger... ok for 8 week old piggies just don't leave the second shampoo on for full 5 mins

Hope the shampoo does the trick for you. If you feel you want something stronger from the vet (not recommending this, just how you feel etc.) What I did was rang up, told them a pig had lice and bought some good spot on stuff for her. There was no consultation fee, and the stuff was not expensive, so an actual 'visit' is not always necessary. The piggy I had was a rescue (Maggie) and had had years of neglect, and lice. That was the only reason I opted for something stronger after an initial bath in lice and easy. Good luck. xx

Thank YOU!

Hi everyone, i just wanted to thank you all for the advice on lice..... i received my gorgeous guineas lice and easy today and gave all 4 a bath....i cant beleive how well it has worked all the dead lice fell off in the water adn i cant see anything alive on them at the moment so after a second wash to get rid of the egg fingers crossed we are done! Thanks so much has saved me a fortune at vets I'm sure! xx

hey mate!
my mum got my 2 piggies from pets at home and they day after i get them i noticed they had little white things running around on them so i took them back to pets at home that day because they came with the piggies when i got them i asked to speak to manager, first they gave me some spot on stuff as they thought they werre flees so i done that twice

then went back a werek later as they still didnt budge!

As they have a built in vets at the aylseford one in maidstone

they gave me a free treatment called ultra spot on for all things. mites, lice and flees

... hope that helps :)
