Hi guys, we're thinking of adding to our guinea pig family...

We've got 2 boars at present and want to add x2 neutered females and make 2 pairs. The boars aren't castrated so would that work?

Look forward to your thoughts :)

Short answer No, boys will fight to the death if girls are added to the group. In the wild they lived in herds with one male ruling the pack - if you have a pair of boys who get along well don't add to them as you may find your male pigs fallout .

A trio of boys can work but it doesn't happen often and depends on the pigs.

If you wish to expand I would consider another pair of boys - as the smell of girls can upset your bonded pigs.

Good Luck x

Ooh, lucky boys having a wifey each :))
Are the boys together ? It would be a crying shame to separate a happy duo - why not just add two girls to live together ?/
Cannot guarantee any pairing will work, depends on the temperament of the individual piggies. I would reconsider as you may end up with a lot of single piggies :(

Thanks for your advice. In your opinion would 2 neutered males get along in a run with 2 non-snipped? At night the 2 pairs would be in seperate hutches.

Also, hypothetically, with a pair of boars, do you neuter both or just one pig? Say, the less dominant one.

Neutering does not change there behaviour - a Trio rarely works so 4 boys would most likely not work. If you have a pair that currently get on I wouldn't add to them but if you want to expand your piggies then I would have a separate pair. I wouldn't allow them to interact at all with your current pair that's a recipe for a disaster!

Hiya, the boys are together. They get on well most of the time but i've noticed the odd bitten ear on the more submissive pig. We wondered if we could pair up the pigs with a female pig as we want to add more to the family but don't want piglets and welcome suggestions.

Would neutered females still drive non snipped boars wild if they were in a group?

Yes, a pack consists of 1 boy and girls. If they get along well I would not add to your boys.

Same applies they still know they are girls!

Hmmm, tricky one. Would love to get more pigs, if it's not resposible to add more then that's that I guess.

All girls will drive them wild :))
We have two sets of boars, a herd of six girls and a 'married couple' who live in one huge set up divided by grids and are careful the boys can't smell them.
If the boys have signs of fighting, it may be worthy considering getting them neutered and finding a girlfriend each for them - many rescues do dating so they can chose their partners x)x) I would only consider this if they couldn't live together as a last resort.
Without sounding condascending, I would read as much info on males/females on the net, there are some great sites to learn from as well as members here.

I personally would not upset the apple cart be a shame to end up with piggies that get aggresive and have to live on there own. I have all boars so there is no girlie scent around but they do bicker and the odd ear nip but its not serious and the next time you look there curled up together.

I no its hard when you want more can you not have another set up for 2 more boys and they live side by side to your exsisting ones but not physically in with them.
