Hi Every one.
I last posted about Pepper being ill -

http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=42730

He finished his 1 weeks course of Bytril on Tuesday night. Everything was fine. Then today sqeaking again whilst pooing (weeing?)
Dashed to vet. Saw some-one different. He was great. Agreed to do x-ray towel wrapping. Off he went with Pepper. He managed to get 2 x-rays by sitting Pepper on the x-ray plate in his carry box as he struggled in towel (so he said) He throughly checked him over- really well. Didnt find him in pain while probing him etc. Anyway he also agreed to give me a weeks course of Septrin instaed of Byrail. He looked the dosage up and said 1ml twice a day. Does that sound right? He thought it sounded a lot but he said thats what the dosage said. He also gave him a jab of painkiller.
Sorry for rushed thread but have to dash for work soon.
Many thanks Paula

By the way, the x-ray didnt show any stones in the bladder

And Pepper has gain weight from last week 1.34kg to 1.41kg.

Septrin Paediatric Suspension, 0.5ml twice daily for 10-14 days is the usual dose. (1ml total daily).

At last, a vet that has taken an xray without the need to give the animal concerned a general anaesthetic!

I think I have heard of the most severe, chronic cases of cystitis needing a dose as high as 1ml twice a day, but it is only in exceptional cases. 0.5ml twice daily is the usual dose. Plenty of fluids too, while he has got cystitis - water and cranberry juice can both help.

1.4kg is a little larger than the "average" guinea (the majority seem to weigh 1kg - 1.2kg) but not so different as to require a double the usual dose. Good to hear his weight is stable. :)

Yes Pepper is a big lad :red But he does get loads of excercise and lives in large c&c. He doesnt eat very many pellets but forever munching on hay - loads of it, all different types. And veggies.

Anyway I missed the vets call as I was at work. But he left me a voice message. And he said he had checked the dosage again for me. And it says the dosage should be in the dose range for my Guinea pig 0.5ml twice a day to 1ml twice a day, so the minumum amount dose would be 0.5ml.

I'm so relief that I have found a vet that is working with me now instead of against me, (even though I had to query the dosage.) He doesnt seem to mind trying something he has never done and he listened to me.
The vet adviced Bytril again as it was seeming to work in the 7 days he was on it, but as soon as he came off it started again. He knew the other vet should have put him on a longer course. He let it my decision whether to continue him on Bayril or change to Septrin. Hopefully I made the right choice as lots of people on here are advising Seprin.
I have another appointment in a weeks time

I find that sows tend to weigh 1-1.5lb and boars 2.5-3lb. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule!

My guys have not had GAs for x-rays or scans....

You are lucky then Lucinda, such vets are somewhat few and far between.

Mistake;
Correction;
I should have written that sows tend to weigh 2-2.5lb
and boars 2.5-3lb.

I presume there is enough radiation from the rocks in Cornwall!
