Advice on Metaclopromide

Hi everyone. Can I ask your advice on Metaclopromide please? I took Toffee back to the vet today is he keeps getting bloat although not as bad as before and he is eating really well. My usual vet wasn't there but the one that was said he was by no means an expert with GPs.

He gave Toffee another shot of Metaclopromide and suggested Toffee having 1ml orally per day for a while. He said I could probably give the iv drug he'd given orally but it wouldn't taste nice. I could mix it with some no sugar cranberry juice maybe.

But I wondered if there was an oral style solution of Metaclopromide I could get? He said he'd have to order a 150ml bottle which would be about £60 and obviously toffee wouldn't need all that but he said if I could get a smaller oral amount elsewhere he could write me a prescription. Do any of you have any advice for me on this? Sorry for the long post.
 
The best treatatment for gut problems (which includes bloat and stasis) is a combination of cisapride (0.5mg/kg) and zan-tac (2mg/kg) twice daily.

Zan-tac (Ranitidnine) can be got in the human form from the chemist. Cisapride needs to be ordered (min order 100ml per named animal ) from Dechra in the Netherlands

Metoclopromide only stimulates the foregut - not the hind gut. The above two work better on the hind gut which is important for piggies given they are hind gut fermenters.

However - this doesn;t address the cause of his bloat problems - just deals wth the symptoms. Perhaps he is one of those piggies that needs to have a diet of just hay, fresh grass and dried food? I have two piggies who are now "nil veggies" because of the gut issues they have with leafy greens.

There is nothing wrong with printing this post and taking it to your vet. If your vet wants to talk to another vet before prescribing I am happy to given them my vets details......Melissa or Rob at Seers Croft, Horsham.

Thank you Pebble I will show this to the vet tomorrow. Toffees bloating now seems worse :-(

The emeprid that we have in stock here is for animals, but then, I'm at a vets :))

I will ask the vet about the Cisapride and Zan-tac but he will probably have to order the Cisapride. Perhaps we can give the Metaclopromide orally in the meantime as he doesn't have the oral version. He said he would write me a prescription for emepride if I can get it online. That will take time too tho.

I'm concerned that Toffees bloat is worse since the injection yesterday. Have stopped all veggies.:(
 
Saw the vet. They don't have Cisapride but he said they wish they could have it. It was banned here apparently but is really useful in animals. Or rather, was.

I got some liquid Zan-tac and Metaclopromide from him and am dosing Toffee twice a day so fingers crossed that this helps. Bless him he's eating really well. I mushed up some pellets to syringe feed in a bowl and he's just eating it straight from the bowl. :)
