Hey

Putt has had sloppy poo's since last night. We have took her off fresh veg, which she is not impressed with - apart from a piece of green pepper this morning.. Trying to get her to eat lots of hay. She has had 1ml of Fibreplex also.

I'm a little concerned regarding her Vit C intake if I have to keep her on hay for a day or 2.
Can anyone recomend where to get Vit C tablets from suitable for piggies from and a dose? She weigh's 1.160 kg.

Thanks

These Oxbow ones aren't cheap but I've heard a few people here mention that they use them so I'm going to give them a try soon:

To be honest I'm never sure about vit c tablets sold for humans. Lots of people seem to use them but they always have so many extra ingredients (sugar/sweetener, flavourings, bulking agents etc) that I don't know if they're safe/suitable. Also many human ones contain other vitamins/minerals and often come in such huge potencies it'd be hard to dose correctly.

Willow would get soft poos a lot, so I got her Oxbow vitamin c tablets. I think they each contain 50 mg of vitamin c. Willow loved them!

I hope Putt is feeling better soon! x>>

Don't panic! She is not coming to any harm with being off fresh food (and vitamin C) for a few days. Scurvy is long term vitamin C deficiency and takes some time to manifest. Please stop the pepper and keep her completely on dry food. If it doesn't get better within a day or two, please see the vet. When you reintroduce veg, do so slowly and carefully, in small batches until you can be sure that her digestion is working properly again.

In a pinch, you can always give 1/8 of a normal supermarket tablet, ideally dissolved in 1-2ml of water and syringed for best effect. Otherwise, get Oxbow vitamin C tablets.

I hope that Putt is better soon! Has she been on the lawn?

Thank you all so much for speedy helpful replies and well wishes. Will take her off fresh from now onwards.

I am tempted by the vets tomorrow or Tuesday to be honest, she suffers with poo/bladder probs anyway so just want to be sure she's ok. The poo has some form but is very wet and some has mucas on it.

Will get some Oxbow tablets in to pop in the piggie cupboard.

Wiebke - No lawn activity for Putt!

Thanks again x

Oh, sorry one more question - Is it still ok to feed her her Gerty? This may be the final straw if I take it away - a major grump will ensue

I recently found out the Oxbow Vitamin C tablets are made up of Calcium Ascorbate which means you are effectively giving 50mg of Calcium to your pig, as well as Vitamin C. That being said a few days of the Oxbow Vit C will do no harm but as Patrick has such serious bladder issues I decided it was better to remove the Oxbow tablet's. I have yet to find a substitute.

Thanks for the heads up on that.

Just hay would be better and would help her getting settled quicker. Make sure that she has plenty of fluids.

If you wish to, can give her "poo soup", made from fresh healthy poos from a friend. That sounds yucky, but it will give her a dose of all the friendly bacteria she needs. You may notice that ill piggies on recovery will eat their friends' poos for exactly that reason. Otherwise, a pinch of probiotics will also help.

We have already gave 'Poo Soup' she loves it (wrong!) Fibreplex seems to have kicked in and poo's are more formed (phew!) Thank you and everyone else so much for the advice x

Good news. Just be patient for another couple of days.
