My male indoor guinea pig Jacob was neutered 5 days ago and seemed to be recovering well, eating and drinking immediately post op, however he now seems to be off his food and not drinking a lot, he is not showing any other signs of illness, he looks healthy, he has been eating his hay but i actually think he may be a bit depressed, is this normal a few days post op or should i be concerned? please help.

Keep a really close eye on him.

My Louie stopped eating after being neutered and it was not good.
Make sure he's pooping like normal, too, as that can get backed up if they're not eating right.

Is he eating his pellets as well as hay?
And you said he's drinking. That's good.

It's kind of normal for them to be a bit mopey, though.

thanks for that, i think he may be constipated because this is a pig who could poop for England but he has hardlt passed anything and they are not properly formed, he has been on a course of antibiotics post op which could have caused this. I think a trip back to the vets is the answer.

He may have an upset tummy caused by the antibiotics, which antibiotics is he on and how much dosage, how many times a day?

Giving a probiotic such as biolapis can help in these situations.

Fingers crossed for him x

the antibiotics he has been on are called Baytril 2.5%, i was giving him 0.24mls twce daily for 5 days.

Make sure you give him a probiotic to stimulate his appetite and stabilise his guts. (You can get it at the vets or at pet@home, if necessary).

Loss of weight is not uncommon after neutering.

My best wishes to poorly Jacob!

I have just returned from the vet with Jacob and feel awful cause the vet notices a mite infestation in his ears which i had not picked up on (concentrating too hard on the other end and trying not to over handle him) so he has had a shot of pain relief and ivermectin treatment. I am surprised he has mite infection as he is the only pig in the house at the mo and none of my other pigs are infected, but i guess his immune system was low after the op which could have contributed, he has started to chew on his hay again, fingers crossed that he gets better quickly.

These things can already sit in skin the waiting to pounce when the piggy is stressed or weakened, and it's easy to miss them!

I'm glad that he's feeling more the thing and will be hopefully a happy boy soon!
