For a while I've been wanting to get a neutered boar to join my girls I've contacted all my local rescues and either got no response or been told there are no neutered boys available. Then today I stumbled across a gorgeous neutered boy on preloved. While I'd much rather support a local rescue centre I'm feeling very tempted. The add does say he comes with a cage so maybe I could donate the cage to a rescue centre if I did adopt him.
I feel very torn at the moment. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do?

I got my 2 boars on gumtree. They were together in a ferplast 100 cage. They have since fallen out and are living seperately in a 3x2 c&c each. They were ok health wise, apart from alby's eye (cataract) so it was an ongoing problem before he came to me. So I guess what I am saying is as long as you are prepared for potential vets bills then yes you could adopt him. However I would check to see he's definately been neutered. Good luck whatever you decide.

Personally even if he's not from a rescue, he obviously needs a loving home so it's better he goes to you than someone with no idea! And piggies in rescues I'd of thought would be more likely to get better homes than those from other places?!

I would also get him vet checked to ensure he is neutered and quarantine him for 2 weeks before introducing him to your girls . You will run the risk of your girls not accepting him and you being stuck with a single boar who may not be neutered though. X

Yeah I'll deff get him vet checked and quarantined before introducing if i do get him. Hadn't thought of double checking he's neutered though, that's a good point. When quarantining would he have to be kept in a different room to my girls or could he just be kept in the same room but away from their cage?

Here are our tips of quarantining. If you cannot do a separate room, please try to keep him as far away as possible.

It is not quite as easy to check whether a neutered boar is really neutered, but it may be useful to ask the people you pick him up from whether they would give you the address of the vet clinic they have used to have his medical details transferred. Generally, a boar would not be advertised as neutered if he wasn't.

Thanks weibke thats some really useful information. Good to know he could be quarantined in the same room as my girls. I have never thought of getting vet records transfered.

It is always preferable to do it in another room, but even half a quarantine is better than none.

I'm gonna be picking him up on Friday. It sounds like he comes from a really loving home but he didn't get on with the two boys his owner already had which is why he's being rehomed. He's been living alone his whole life so I'm so happy I'll be able to give him a home where he'll get two lovely wifepigs to keep him company. I just hope everything goes well with the bonding process. These are some pics of him, isn't he gorgeous.

Thank you. I just hope my girls like him as much as I do.
