Advice on UTI

Thanks all, I think I will go for it and see. The price isn’t too bad for one either. She mentioned she would ring me if she needed to sedate her lightly, it would literally only be a quick whiff to calm her. She said she has done ultrasounds to pigs before. She said she will get images as well and liaise with specialists if there’s something she’s not sure of, my guts saying do it if the pig will be ok? Will also ask her about glucosamine @Piggies&buns

Glucosamine is a food supplement and beneficial where there is any chance the bladder has been bashed by stones, sludge or cystitis.
It takes several weeks to build up though so starting to quickly is a good idea

Ok thank you! In terms of her diet, do you feed dry forage instead of nuggets or can you do both? Their currently on the Piggie parcels nuggets. I have weaned them off the science selective nuggets because of the alfalfa base, not sure it will make much difference. I’m just not sure if I can feed dry forage as well as nuggets. I think this was mentioned in a sticky from Wiebke. I’ll have to double check

Dried forage and nuggets form the same part of the diet.
You can feed both but I would do half and half rather than a tablespoon of each.
It also depends what forage you are using though - dried dandelion for example has a higher calcium content so I would not give them at the same time as pellets
(To clarify any dried forage has more concentrated nutrient levels due to the water being removed but some will be higher than others in calcium)

Removing alfalfa from the diet will make a difference, along with filtering the water - those two things will reduced any over intake of calcium.

So you’re feeding piggie parcels pellets - which ones?
If it’s then urinary support ones then you cannot give additional glucosamine. They already contain plenty of glucosamine so you would ‘overdose’ if you give any additional.
If it’s the standard ones then you are fine to give additional glucosamine

So they are the original ones. The trouble is they don’t like them as much as the others and currently not eating much of them. Shall I persevere? They are eating some then not bothering, so at the moment they arnt eating many nuggets, but I guess that’s better than too many!? The forage I have ordered is on the piggie parcels website. It’s the urinary bundle. Have a look and you’ll see what’s included. I’m beginning to confuse myself at this stage on what to do and give and when!

Don’t overthink it!

You can give the forage instead of the pellets.
Make sure to offer a good variety in veg so they are still getting vit C etc as well as the fluid

If they aren’t eating the pellets then you have more leeway with other areas of the diet anyway. That’s the whole reason I don’t feed pellets at all - I don’t worry when I feed kale and I’d rather feed kale given it has water content than dry high calcium foods anyway.

The pellets can be an acquired taste for some piggies. I would persevere but if they don’t like them then I wouldn’t worry about it at all, I’d just not feed any pellets
