Hi, I've just been giving Minky a thorough check-over as she's now recovering from some of her ills. I've discovered that under her mouth chin/neck area she's got several bald patches probably caused by the multitude of meds she's been taking & some dribbling out of her mouth. I've got lots of stuff in the house but wondered if anyone can advise the best thing to use. She's also go some matted fur in the same area but I'll probably trim this first before any treatment.

Gorgeous guineas do moisturisers and the likes perhaps send them a message? They may have a soothing moisturiser or something

Hamsters lose their fur around their mouths if they're often damp (usually teeth issues, or they chew the spout of the bottle) and they usually get their fur back as soon as the damp stops happening ... I assume piggies would be the same :-)

Hi Beks, That sounds similar to Minky's symptoms. I've got lots of Gorgeous Guineas products. I'm currently bathing the affected area with warm water thhen applying a little Manuka & Neem Shampoo to soften the hair/fur beneath her mouth. I'm also using a very fine toothed comb to try to loosen the stuck up fur. Some of the fur is coming out in small clumps but Minky is not in distress, sshe seems to sense that I'm helping her. Once I've cleaned & dried this area I'm going to aaply some cream. I've got Aloe Vera Gel, Super Souffle Cream, Kwench Lotion & Galens Green Cream. I'm really spoilt for choice but I think I'll use the Aloe Vera Gel together with Aloe Melt. I'm also going to send email to Gorgeous Guineas for advice. I'm going to Bunny Burrows tomorrow morning so will take Minky with me because Gwen is really good with lots of different treatments and may also be able to help or advice.

I would have gone with the Super soufflé cream probably but would be interested to see what Gorgeous Guineas say. I know that people who have been on a lot of antibiotics can be more prone to oral thrush as their normal mouth and skin flora is affected by the meds. It may well be the same for piggies so something mildly anti-fungal may help.

I got a reply from Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas, she suggested "Really the only solution for matted hair is to carefully cut out the matts with a pair of nail scissors. You will need an extra pair of hands to do this safely. Once you have done this you can mix a bit of shampoo with warm water and use something like a J cloth to clean the area and then rinse off the shampoo and dry. If the skin looks raw, you can apply some plain Aloe Vera Gel - it needs to be at least 99.x% pure Aloe Vera Gel as a lot are poor quality. "

I've been to Bunny Burrows today & Gwen cut away the matted fur then I applied all round that area some Gorgeous Guineas Aloe Vera Gel. The Gel was also applied twice last night after I'd shampooed that area with Gorgeous Guineas Manuka & Neem Shampoo.Several little clumps of fur came away when I used a fine toothed steel comb. I'm making doubly certain that her chin is dry after each use of the syringe which is also used to give he water.

I also phoned my vet to tell her about how well Minky is doing & asking if I can drop any of the drugs. She said to end giving Minky the Metacam, Emeprid, Cisapride & Zantac. This cuts down 8 syringes a day which will help.
