Our new addition Dotty is just over 4 months old and is such a quick piggie to catch hold of. She scurries around and we have a job to catch her. However, she has calmed slightly due to us handling her often mind, so that is good. She does enormous leaps to get back in her cage, or get onto the carpet, I'm always fearful that she's going to hurt herself.

Anyway, what I've tried to do, especially when we first had her a week or so ago, was to try and weigh her, but she is just too quick and will not keep still.

I have a flat, small kitchen scales, only a cheap one from Asda to try out and am wondering on any tips or the best way to weigh a fast piggie please?

Thanks loads.

Have you got a cosy? Weigh that first or after and then weigh Dotty snuggled up in it.

I did that with whirlwind Ceri and it worked out. If the reading is not precise it doesn't matter too much; all you want to get is a general idea of how much they are roughly and that the next time you weigh them is more at that stage.

Give Dotty lots of praise and a little treat afterwards and she'll get the hang of it!

I use an old oval cracked plastic bowl that is just perfectly piggy sized with some kitchen paper in the bottom, but you can try the cosy with or without bowl.

Ooh, righto girls, thanks. :)

Just so frightened she's going to launch herself everywhere. I will do it on the carpet in the living room! Oohh! LOL :))

I've got this problem with our latest rescue. She's pregnant but darts about and I'm frightened she's going to hurt herself.

I use a small cardboard carrier. I weigh the carrier first and then put her securely in it and weigh them both together.

Substract one from the other and voila - piggies weight.

Good luck

Thanks everyone. :)

I managed to get round to weighing Dotty just under a week ago, (in between her feet moving in mid air LOL), and she weighed approximately 785g, give or take a few grams. She is now 20 weeks old. :) Do you think her weight is normal for her age?

She has definately grown since we had her on May 8th and is developing quite a "lady bottom", is this unique to just sows? Maisy has a huge bum, but is a bigger framed pig altogether, though I don't think Dotty is going to be far behind her, she is certainly a lot bigger than little Daisy who was 4 years old. rolleyes

I shall see if I can find more time over the next day or so, to pop more pics on of them both. :)

Ooh, forgot to say that Maisy weight approx 1500g. She was 1450g in October last year when we adopted her. :)

She is a good weight for coming up to 5 months old!

I got some £7 digital scales from Asda.
Dave is also a fast one... and very powerful as well! The digital scales come with a perfect piggy sized plastic bowl so i put the bowl on, set to zero and go and get Dave. He is also very hard to catch. When he's in the bowl i like cup my hands around him, like over the top of him near his face and he moves slightly but he's in there long enough for me to see the reading.
I hope this works for you!
