Hi guys, I've noticed a pea sized lump under my boys chin. In his throat i think. I'm very worried about this. He doesn't appear to be unwell. I'm going to take him to the vet but in the meantime, does anyone have any ideas? Tx

Could be a cyst or abecess? My piggy has lump too. I read in my Peter Gurney book that it's quite common but needs treating

Most lumps are not malignant, but it is always best to have your vet check them over.

There is quite a range of different lumps, from harmless fatty deposits onwards. I have never had lumps, so I can't help you much, but here is a good link: http://www.guinealynx.info/lumps.html

Camilla, my long haired gpig had a lump under her chin some time ago. Turned out to be a cyst which was treated, disappeared, and now she's fine. :)

Where exactly is the lump, it could be an enlarged lymph node?

Under the jaw/chin is a common place for abscesses to develop, but there are multiple types of lump and causes, so a check with a reputable vet would be worthwhile.

Hope your Piggy is well. My piggy has just been lanced today and is antibiotics. rolleyes

It appears to be right in the centre of his throat. Perhaps a cyst then. He's off to the vet tomorrow so hopefully it's antibiotics and bobs your uncle!

I hope your piggy is better soon Cavy2009. Hugs to you both :-)

If it is in the mid-line of the neck it is not an enlarged lymph node.
If, however, it is a cyst then antibiotics will have no effect on it whatsoever.
A small sebaceous cyst can be left alone, but under review. If it needs to be removed this can be done using a local, not general, anaesthetic.

Thank you Alcesterpigs, that does at least make me worry a little less! Syd's off to the vets at 6.30 this evening so I'll report back then. He's never been to the vet before bless him. Always been healthy.

good luck for you and your piggie at the vets later. Fingers crossed

Well we've been to vet. He thinks a cyst. He could move the lump around a bit and when he put a needle in, there was no fluid. Syd was so good bless him.

So it's antibiotics and back next week. Need to keep an eye on the size of the cyst. If it grows, possible surgery :-(

Syd's had a little piece of apple as a reward and seems quite happy. Fingers crossed!

Well he's to stay an antibiotics for another two weeks. Not sure of the point of this although I guess if there IS any infection... The lump is still there, he's not showing any signs of discomfort. Vet says he will leave it alone if it doesn't grow any bigger, but otherwise it means an op. Does any one have piggies who had lumps for a while that just stay "ok" for good and don't become something nastier eventually?
