hi there i would like to ask a question. i am new to this guinea pig ownership and have recently got 2 wonderfull little boys who are now about 11 weeks old they live in an indoor cage at the moment but will eventually go outside (i thought it would be good for them to get used to us by having them live inside). what i would like to know is they were brought together and although not actual brothers have been together all the time. they seem to get on great they eat and sleep together. one of them occasionally chatters and wiggles his bum at the other (i have only seen one of them doing this) does anyone know what this means? out the 2 of them one is very adventurous and mad the other is a bit more laid back (this is the one chattering)
sorry if ive explained this all wrong and thanks in advance for any replies x

Hello, and welcome to the addictive world of piggies. It is normal when you keep two boars together for one of them to establish themselves as the dominant male this is what you have been observing - You may also see them face to face holding their noses in the air and unfortunately some mounting is sure to come at some point but don't be alarmed and If you have any more questions just ask away:)

Hello! This is perfectly normal in boars. The one who is chattering is showing his dominance to the other one...bum wriggling, chattering, rumbling and sometimes mounting (!) are all normal behaviour.
If the chattering gets really loud and constant and they `square up` to eachother, this is not such a good sign. This may happen around the age of 3-5 months when they hit piggy puberty.

If at any stage they actually fight or you notice any injuries on one, you will need to seperate them. Not wishing to worry you but making you aware that this can sometimes happen. I have 6 boar pairs and they all do have a bit of a fall out sometimes..it flares up and they have a good old chase and chatter and settles down again :))

To minimize the risk, the bigger the accomodation you provide, the better so they have ample space..at least 4 ft x 2 ft, preferably more. Two of everything and a place each to "get away" from the other pig.

Hiya and welcome! :)

They are just sorting out the dominant role. Chattering can be a sign of agression but all my boars do it and nothing comes out it.

Good luck with them. I love boars :)

I am sure it is just a male dominance thing like has been posted above.
However, as you are new to guinea pig ownership, and I don't mean to sound daft, but just do check that they look the same "down below".

I only say this because of my experience when I first got two piggies as pets for my daughters. It was a long time ago and it was the first time I had owned guinea pigs. There was a lot of bum wiggling and growling going on and I thought it was fighting talk. I took them to a local Cavy Club member and she informed me ... with a giggle ... that it was flirting! rolleyes

Sorry, I didn't mean to alarm you, just thought I would say. I am sure though it is just a male, I am the bigger one, type of thing.

And if it is chattering with the teeth, rather than low growling or mumbling type of thing, then it is a boar v boar thing.

Little Gregory who is half the size of Laurent is having a phase of trying it on typical aby!:))lots of space and 2 of everything will help and pray for the end of puberty at about 1 year to 18 months!LOL

thanks

thanlyou so much for all your replies. I was really hoping thats what it would turn out to be as the one who is chattering is the quieter, less nosey, less adventurous of the 2 but he certainly seems to be the boss. I was planning on moving them outside into a large hutch but was little concerned whether id be better off waiting till after the winter as they are still small or whether to just go ahead and do it them bring them in when the weather gets bad.
Thanks again to all replies ive never joined a forum where everyone is so helpfull so fast ! think ill be using this loads now lol
