Advice please on teeth problems

There are a few members in the Wolves area - I will ask them for you. Unfortunately I think the PM facility has been removed for all members with fewer than 50 posts.

Well he has been eating a bit of dried and some fresh out of his hutch, not vast amounts but he has been picking for quite a while which is good.
I don't like to get my hopes up but its still great just to see him eat.

I usually feed him five times a day but today I will do him four times, I want him to keep making the effort to eat. We have got the vets tomorrow so I will keep hoping .

It is a positive sign that he is trying to eat independently.

I did ask a couple of members about vets in Wolves. area, only one has got back to me so far and she says there's a vets in Wolverhampton town centre but she's got no idea if they are any good with piggies.

I will try this other vets tomorrow first and see if they are any good, you never know they might be good ones. thankyou

Well he seems to be eating much better, not as good as he should but thats to be expected, but he is even managing dried food a bit. I have fed him twice today which is getting more difficult, but I think I may leave him now until about 8 tonight and give him a good feed before bed.
I am weighing him every couple of days and although he is skinny 830gram he hasn't lost anymore over the last week so hopefully he will put a bit on now[ever hopeful]. I just hope his teeth don't play up again too soon.

Have you considerd going to your local rodentologist? They are more trained in rodent care than a vet is, they can look at the teeth, cut and trim if needed, all without knocking the poor piggy out and you dont get a hefty bill at the end. I'm afraid i do- not know any local to you, but I'm sure sombody on here would know.

How did he get on with your son's friends pig?

He wasn't interested in my friends pig at all, in fact he looked a bit panic stricken and kept hiding, probably because he is not well.

I would take him to a local rodent vet but I don't know of any I have tried searching but keep getting normal vets.

I took him yesterday to the other vets his teeth were ok but now he has an abcess under his neck:( , I can't believe I didn't spot it because I have had him out so much handling him. he is on baydrill now for the next week to see if there is any inprovement, although she didn't give me any bio laptis stuff I asked but she said I didn't need any? do I need to get some?
To be honest this vet was no better than the last one but was a lot dearer, so I will go back to the other one I don't like swapping around I would rather stop with the one I know unless I can find a proper rodent vet. Especially if he needs an op to drain the abcess. I will keep soldiering on and hope he can do the same, any advice is appreciated, its getting us both down.

Baytril is a waste of time for head/neck abscesses. The cause of the problem needs to be found and eliminated.
An abscess is easily drained, no general anaesthetic is needed.

I asked about draining the abcess as well and was told it needs to be done under a GA,can't see why myself but I am not a vet I suppose. She thought it might be as a result of the dental work but I don't think she knew.I am beginning to feel a bit useless here but without a proper rodent vet then I can only do what I can do.
I don't mind traveling a bit but I don't drive so it will have to be OH who takes us but how can I find one, I have looked online, and other vets are reluctant to refer you to other people {I have asked].
I will accept help in any form.

If you ring the Cambridge Cavy Trust (Vedra) she can usually recommend a rodentologist near to you, and Alcesterpigs knows some too... worth a trip. I take all my guineas to Vedra

Thankyou ,I have emailed and asked for help.
Does he need bio laptis with the baydrill or is there anything else that will do the job.

Biolapis or AviPro are commonly used probiotics to restore the good bacteria that are killed off by the Baytril - they can certainly do no harm and may do some good, syringe them an hour or two after the Baytril rather than at the same time.

Pets at home sells a probiotic too, if you can't get the above, most vets seem to have Biolapis if you ask for it.

He seems worse today ,he has hardly eaten at all, does the antibiotic affect the appetite do you know, I am feeling pretty useless today.
Sorry a bit of self pity there:(

Ruth, can you email alcesterpigs? A PM isn't possible but hopefully you'll be able to email him. He's Birmingham way. A few people from the forum have been to see him.

Or should I say, took their pigs to see him.

Much closer to you than Vedra.

ETA: No email option available on his profile.

Have you tried phoning Vedra, instead of email? She'll be able to advise of rodentologists in your area. Her number is 07721 026401.

I don't know how to find his e mail? we could go up this weekend if it was poss.

I have rang Vedra before and she has seen one of my piggies straight away, definately your best option and worth travelling to her she is so brilliant with the piggies and will hopefully know straight away what the problem is and get your piggy on the road to recovery :)

Vedra is over two hours away so thats a long way, a bit awkward if we need to make lots of trips especially as I don't drive.

I have rung her up she has given me a number in warwickshire for a man who does teeth but will he also be able to treat the abcess as well.I need a rodentoligist really.

They really are few and far between aren't they.

Hope you get on ok with your visit to the rodentologist in Warwickshire :)
I am lucky my rodentologist lives half an hour away, however, I have been to Vedra's with my piggies which is about an hour and forty five minutes away, luckily I drive.
Let us know how your little piggy gets on :)

I think I am being a bit paranoid, he has been out eating for the past 30 minutes, perhaps he has eaten and I have not seen him . I think I am watching him too much?

He hasn't lost any weight since last week[I do weigh him] and I have cut down on the syringe feeding a bit, its getting really difficult because he fights me all the time, so I think he must be eating some,he ate quite a lot earlier, well a lot compared to what he has been eating.

R. See pm.
That is a nuisance, you don't have the pm facility!

Yup, this is where the loss of PMs to those with under 50 posts is a problem! Frustrating. mallethead

R. Why not take up the offer of help, anything is worth trying if it can help to sort out your pig's problem?

I have rung her up she has given me a number in warwickshire for a man who does teeth but will he also be able to treat the abcess as well.

Yes, he will. I'm pretty sure it'll be the person who has treated my pig's teeth and abscess successfully. Give him a ring.

Do you know his second name I wrote Paul down but for some reason didn't get his second name, it doesn't really matter I have his number its just better when I ring.Have got to check with OH first when we can go up.
