Advice Please, Poorly Pig :-(

I dropped my two boars off at the vets this morning for castration, was told to ring at 1 to find out how they were, well, the phone rang and it was the vets, so i immediately began to panic :.... Well Sooty was absolutley fine, they castrated him no problem, but Flash began to vomit when the gave him the aneasthetic (i was under the impression that Guinea Pigs couldnt vomit :{) so he wasnt castrated, the vets have told me i cant pick them up until 3 so now i am really concerned, do you know if there will be any long term effects and should i watch out for anything in particular? Thanks x
 
Guinea pigs can't vomit, you're right. But it doesn't sound good.

Your vet should be able to advise you about any required antibiotics/ pain relief after the op. They might be drowsy from the anaesthetic but the important thing is to get them eating again as soon as poss to keep their guts moving. Tempt them with their favourite veg and make sure they stay warm and hydrated

Thanks, am really worried about him, i thought he would be fine, he is so big compared to Sooty, i thought if there would be a problem with either it would be sooty. Just really worried now, they advised me to take him back in 2 weeks so they could try the op again but i am really worried about that :...
 
Thank you, i am soo worried about him, been out to my car and got syringes and things ready ( i am a district nurse so have plenty of supplies!) just in case i need to syringe feed him, i am wishing i had weighed them before too, so i can keep an eye on their weight. I just want 3 o clock to come round really quickly so i can go bring them home
 
I have just got the boys home, and the vet was adamant that Flash vomited, i even have metoclopramide (anti sickness drug) on my bill, he isnt eating yet, so am getting worried about that, he wont even eat carrot which is his favourite:( his weight is 1.262kg, but i am not sure what a good piggie weight is as sooty is only 642g :{ but on the up side sooty is munching away on my lap right now and seems non the worse from his little op!
 
Flash's weight is a good weight I think. Getting him eating is the important thing. Try him with everything you can first to see if he will take it on his own, if not you will have to syringe feed. Wiebke's link above gives excellent advice on syringe feeding. After an op I try weighing twice a day to make sure all is well :)

If it's any consolation, I had a vet around three years back trying to tell me my pig 'vomited'. When I found a new vet and asked about it, he said that my piggy may well have been keeping some excess food in his mouth which he 'swallowed' into his windpipe and then coughed back up. I don't know if this is maybe what happened to your pig, but you're really right about them not vomiting.

well a bit of good news, i have now managed to tempt Flash with some carrot and he seems to have got his appetite back! :<>
He does seem to have quite rapid breathing at the minute though, going to keep a close eye on him over night and then maybe try and get him an appointment at the Battle Flatt vets which i found in a different post! Is there any particular vet i should ask to see if i need to? Thanks for all your help, advice, love and wheeks!xx>>>
 
Piggies definitely cannot vomit, they are just like horses, one reason I love both (I have a fear of vomit and vomiting!)

It may be as Sappho said that they didn't flush his mouth before the op to remove any excess food, which is often left in their throats/mouth and can go down the windpipe. This may be why he is having a few problems breathing now. I would definitely go and see another vet, shame you are opp north or I would send you to mine she is fantastic.

so if he "appears to have vomited in your vets eyes" that means he may have had some food present in his mouth at the time of anaesthetic.

Any cavy-savvie vet will syringe/flush a piggies mouth BEFORE giving GA


So two strikes then ...... suggest YOU NEED TO TAKE HIM TO A PROPER PIGGIE SAVVY VET!

If you are [*]absolutely sure[/*] in your report above that your vet really said he had vomited.......then please don;t take him back to your current vet....

Please let us know your location and we will try and find you a piggie vet who knows what they;re doing......

Thirsk North yorks - anyone know any piggy savvy vet around - think there's a glut in North Yorks...
 
Flash isn't good today, i have been up half the night with him, his breathing is still not right, the whole of his tummy is rapidly going in and out as he is breathing, and i dont think he has had any water (he has had some broccoli, pepper and carrot though) i have got the number of a couple of vets closeish to me (about 30 miles but i dont care so long as they can help Flash) from TGPF recommended vets list so going to give them a ring and see if i can get him booked in today, i am so glad its my day off work, not quite sure what i would have done if i had to go and leave him. A massive thank you to all of you for your help and advice, i will let you know what the vet says later x
 
Can you syringe some fluids down him, gently? If you don't have a syringe then see if he'll take it off a teaspoon. It's really important to keep him hydrated and see a vet ASAP. It's good that he's eating a bit of veg, he needs to keep his guts moving.

I hope you can find a good vet nearby

Well, finally some good news, Flash is quite poorly, but is expected to make a full recovery! :<>
He has got asymetrical inhalation pneumonia, but luckily because i got him to the vets in time it is not infected, just inflamed lungs, he is now on metacam and baytril and should have made a full recovery in 5 days! I picked up some of the excel food i have heard mentioned a few times too, to aid his recovery along a bit, cant wait till he is sat on my lap licking my fingers again!
I cant tell you all how relieved and happy i am that my little fella is going to be ok, thank you all so so so much for all your help support and advice xx>>>
