Hi, Sparkle is 2.5, have an appointment with Ellie Whitehead in Matlock on Friday but would like opinions on what to do until then.

I noticed a purplish lump under her nipple on 31st dec, tiny bit of blood came out when I felt it, went to local vet the same day - said it may be mastitis or mammary tumour. Vet said it felt soft/liquify rather than hard. Given antibiotics (baytril) and metacam. Some improvement in colour after 10 days - much less purple, but still swollen. Vet said to continue with baytril and metacam till end of next week, unless it stops improving in which case surgery needed.

I don’t think it’s improved at all since change of colour by Thursday last week, now been 18-18 days on baytril. I am going to run out of baytril today, do I ask my local vet for more to give her till appointment with Ellie on Friday, or just stop the antibiotics? From what I’ve read on here since first vets appointment it’s unlikely to be mastitis as she’s not pregnant or feeding?

thanks, sorry it’s long, Trina

Thanks, but I think some of the people on here have more experience of guinea pig illnesses and treatments than my vet which is why I’m asking on here.

I agree, you should ask a vet. Perhaps call Ellie and ask for interim opinion on whether to pick up more antibiotics today.
Unfortunately we have no ability to say whether your piggy needs to be on antibiotics or not.

Ellie has a contact email address for her patients to email for advice and info. I can PM it to you if you don’t have it, I think it’s open for everyone to use but wouldn’t want to post it here just in case.

Yes please, I’d love you to message me with it, thankyou very much!

Hi!

I may be a mammary tumour.

If necessary, contact both Ellie and your vets to discuss the issue on how to cover the gap.

Sparkle is having her lump removed tomorrow, Ellie is doing it, I’m very nervous but think I’ve prepared as much as I can. Read the guides on here about post-op care, syringe feeding etc. Have got white fleece, washed it 3 times, puppy pads for underneath, will have critical care ready and weigh daily.
Any thing else I should do? Any tips on how not to worry constantly for the next few days?!

Update in case anyone else is searching for info:
Sparkle had her nipple and lump removed by Ellie, surgery and recovery all went well, we decided not to biopsy so don't know the exact cause but she is still with me aged 5, it is now 2 and a half years later :)
