I have two sows which are approximately 8 months of age. One is a sheba and the other is a texel. I am wanting to mate them and have borrowed a friends boar who is a normal short haired pig (sorry dont know what breed), and he is 18 months old. I have put him with my two females and he showed interest in them, but they werent too keen on him. Just worried that I am not doing the right thing. How long does he need to stay over at my place in order for them to become pregnant?
Thanks
Nicky

I'm sorry but this is a rescue friendly forum and the forum rules permit us from discussing breeding and showing.

Guinea pigs can fall pregnant very quickly and there are dangers involved when the pig is pregnant.

Please do not breed them. There are rescues all over the country bursting at the seams with unwanted guinea pigs.

Please don't think I am being harsh. It's just I and most members on here are anti breeding as we have seen what damage it can do :(

You are most welcome to ask any other piggy related questions a d post pics of your two if you like :)

Just some of the most very recent "GONE WRONG" pregnancies on the forum i can think of, off the top of my head, Resulting in pups dying, mums having to go through drastic surgery and also mums dying. if you dont want to read all of the threads above, scroll through to the end, that is were you see the tragic consequences.

Dont do it.

I think we need to look at making the rules a bit clearer, and more prominent when people join the forum.

We have had a few breeding threads on here lately, people either cant see the forum rules clearly or are ignoring them :(

After reading your replies and doing some research on the net, i have taken the boy away from my two girls and he will be going home. I dont want to risk the lives of my two girls as they are very precious to us and I really did not know of all the complications that can arise from breeding them. Especially seeing that they are at the age where there pelvis fuses..... I just would never forgive myself if something happend to them. So I am now hoping that in the couple of hours that he was with them.... nothing happend and that they are not pregnant. I will watch them closely and if I think they could be will take them to the vet.

Many thanks for your advice

Nicky

Thank you for seeing sense and taking them out. Hopefully they are not pregnant but if they are feel free to ask any questions on here.

Sadly, it is their instinct to mate, and unlike "most" humans, only takes a split second. Hopefully you and your girls have been lucky. but weekly weighing and monitoring will confirm, but in the mean time please treat them as if they are pregnant, hopefully another member will be able to advise what foods to feed and not feed.

You won't be seeing anything for the next 5-6 weeks, so it will be a waiting game for you.

Please open a thread in our pregnancy section for detailed information on what to do if a pregnancy is possible and to ask any questions you may have over the next few weeks in that same thread to keep all information together. Some sows near their season will have one spontaneously when they meet a boar - it literally takes only seconds.

Thank you

Thank you for your support. I am praying that they are not pregnant. I will open a thread on the pregnancy board. The boy showed interest at first, but my girls were not intrested at all and just ran away. The boy settled down and sat in one corner of the cage by himself, so I am thinking that hopefully it is was not the right time for them to breed.
