Hi all,

you have all seen my piggies there both sisters but one is giving me a bit of concern well alot of concern she has started to be agressive to her little sister and its getting worse! they are both used to being with each other and i dont know whats going on jasmine the older sibling is starting to pick fights with summer the baby sister i know i cant seperate them and have them in different cages as they wouldnt like that they need to be together. tonight was the worse she must have pinched summer quite hard as the squeel she gave out was really loud i have checked her over and cant see any blood shed and thats a good thing. i think it might be a hormone thing do you think she could get spayed to calm her down or is there any other treatment we can do via a vet? please i dont want any of my babies hurt and it stresses me to see jasmine picking a fight. and poor summer she hasnt a aggresive bone in her body. can you help ?

hi generally this sort of agression with girls can be due to them being in heat and *** happen around every 2 weeks although you won't always notice this behaviour everytime.Spaying a female isn't the best option quite risky compared to neutering a boar.how long has the agression been going for?

The agression has been scince i have had them and **** before that when they was at my sisters friends house. It is getting really bad now and i do think it is hormone related poor summer isnt doing it to jasmine and jasmine tonight gave summer a big nip. i am scared she will really hurt her sister.

hmmm if they have been doing it for that long it may be that they plain and simply don't like eachother and that with age and maturity its getting worse?hae they got a nice big cage so summer can get away from jasmine if she needs to? It doent sound to bad atm but if they draw blood then you will have to split them up maybe someone who has more experience with sows will come along soonxxxxx

Yes they have a big cage and two houses and they both sleep in seperate houses but jasmine goes and annoys summer and picks a fight and if summer runs around the cage to get away from jasmine she runs after her till she gets a nip in :-(

Some things you need to consider:

How big is your cage - it may not be large enough for the two girls to co-exist together.
Are either pigs ill/losing weight?
If it's been going on for more than a few days, depending on her age, you may be looking at a girl who is developing ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts can be temporarily treated with hormone injections or permanently treated by a spay. For more information, please see this link: http://www.guinealynx.info/ovarian_cysts.html

If you're 100% sure that you're providing them with at least the minimum cage size requirement for two girls then a vet trip may be necessary to rule out any other reasons for your girls grumpiness/prolonged heat.

For now, make sure you put hay in multiple places/ spread veggies out and if possible have two food bowls and either remove hidey holes and replace it with a fleece over the entire cage or give one same-sized hidey per pig so they feel less like they need to share.

I have sister guinea pigs who were born in October last year. At the beginning of this year they took a dislike to each other. The first born became quite aggressive towards her younger and bigger sister (who's a bit of a push over). It was quite sad seeing that they wouldn't be in the same part of the cage together. And I've heard Cassandra squeal in the same way you described. However for the last month things have calmed down. They're not best pals, but Cassandra leaves Diane in peace now and they even happen to sit next to each other without Cassandra nipping Diane.

They might just go through a phase just now, just the same way human sisters do.

However you are the best judge of their behaviour and if they draw blood or you find that Summer appears to be stressed out and Jasmine is non stop bullying her, then it would be best to separate.

hi ty for your advice the cage is big enough for the both of them i had to get a minibus to bring it home as it wouldnt fit in a car the girls have the same size houses the cage is about 4ft if not bigger i have also notticed she has been drinkink alot more than her little sister if thats got some intrest. and i will book a appt to see their vet tomorrow .
