My piggy Biscuit went in for a castration on thursday and he was kept in over night as his temperature was high.

When he came home on friday he just wasn't himself, he was off his food and drink and in general feeling a bit sorry for himself. The vet told me that this would be normal for a day or so.

Now come Monday he went in for his routine post op check and they kept him overnight again as the genital area was quite inflammed and red. He's back home with me now but he's just not the same, he doesn't want to eat or drink, he's not moving around in his cage and I can't seem to even get a squeak out of him. The vet has given me antibiotics, pain killers and food to give him through syringes.

Has anyone experienced this and is this normal for a piggy to be off character after castration.

Hope this may help a little:

You need to keep a close eye on the op site (I checked twice a day when my boys were de plummed) and keep his bedding scrupulously clean too to minimise any further risk of infection.
Hope all is back to normal very soon (such a worry after surgery I know :()
Please keep us updated on things and sending healing vibes to the little fella x>>
Is he taking food via the syringe ? 120mls over 24 hours is the normal amount I believe.
Weighing him is important too.

First of problem is here:

if he not eat - you need get syringe and feed him manually.
You can make mix in blender with his pellets, may be fresh grass some parsley and feed him.He also need water. We did it using approx 125ml 3 times of day and weighting him make sure that he not losing weight.
If he not eat couple of days ,he will die.

second part is actually healing his injures need to be done by vet.

Hi and welcome to you and your little piggie to the forum :)
I'm so sorry to hear about the complications :(
You've been given some great advice by our members already, but i'd like to add don't forget to use some probiotics 2hrs after giving the antibiotics.
I'm going to post a link for you to read..... this is of a recent piggie being neutered and his after care.
Wishing your little boar mega healing vibes from us all XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Sounds like a possible post op abscess or infection in the wound. This sometimes happens with neutering piggies so you need to be really vigilant. You will need to continue to syringe feed him around the clock if he really isnt eating at all be himself, and if your at all worried, give your vet a call. What antibiotic did the vet prescribe you?

x.

Hi!

Please weigh Biscuit daily to check his food intake. Hand feed either Critical Care recovery food or mushed up pellets; 120ml over the course of 24 hours, also syringe water to keep your boy hydrated. It is vital that he eats and that the guts keep going. Your determined round the clock care can really make the difference between life and death! Please also get some probiotics like biolapsis to support the guts.

What antibiotic and what dose is he on? Could you find an exotics vet within your reach? Your boy has probably either got a bad reaction to the sutures or an abscess.

Biscuit

Thanks for all the advice and replies, unfortunately my beloved biscuit never made it, he passed away this morning.

He wasnt accepting food or drink last night, i syringe fed him all throughout the morning and he was taking to it a bit.

Went to check him again at 7am today, poor thing was lying on his side, and when i picked him up, he was gasping for breath. He also excreted some liquid onto my husbands shirt, which subsequently crystallised.

We have never driven to anywhere as fast as the vet this morning @), but he just didnt recover and passed away on the way there.

As of yet the vet is unable to determine the exact cause, but hopefully we will find out soon.

To be honest I am really feeling mixed emotions and not taking it well at all, on one hand I rather him not be in pain but I can't help feeling that he was 100% healthy before we decided to have him castrated and if only we decided not to do it, he would still be with us today 8...

RIP my gorgeous Biscuit.............. Gone but never forgotten..... :...

Oh sweetheart I am so sorry :( You can't possibly blame yourself, you made the choice with the best of intentions and you did exactly the right thing by asking for advice when you were unsure.

Run free over the Rainbow Bridge Biscuit, you will always be dearly loved and missed xx

I am so very sorry! Neutering is the one operation that can give you a really bad case of guilt, I know. I had a very narrow escape with my Hywel last year, but you can bet that it was all playing very much on my mind, too!

I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed that Biscuit's mate will have a quick and problem free recovery.

RIP Biscuit

PS 1: Please make sure that you wait the full 6 weeks post op with your other boy to be sure that he is 100% safe to go with girls. I have a very cute little surprise piggy curtesy of a supposedly safe over 5 weeks post op boar - it can really happen!

PS 2: It would be great if you considered dating your other boy at one of our recommended (and vetted) guinea pig rescues under expert supervision, so he can find the "swife" or two of his own choice! These rescues rehome only healthy and guaranteed not pregnant sows; all incoming sows go on a mandatory pregnancy watch. Good rescues are the safest place to get piggies from if you don't like nasty surprises.

A loving "marriage" is the most stable piggy bond. Hopefully, the happiness of your other boy will help you somewhat to cope with the pain of your loss!

biscotti & brownie

hi, we bought 2 males, 3 months old, have now had them for 6 weeks. :)p,
Biscotti & brownie, just had brownie checked today, hes has one flaky back right foot. Theyve checked for mites, and send a sample to check for ringworm.

The cost is over £100!, i was considering insurance for these two, can anyone suggest any good insurance company? :))

As far as I know from financial point of view easier to pay insurance yourself once a month and pay for problems.Find good vet.We are using CJ Hall in Mortlake.
